Welcome to Android Hell

Will I NEVER learn  ..........

Firstly, if you think this is about Portal - forget it, go away, find something else to do - 'cos it's not, - this is about Android for mobiles..

Ok , there I am - using my phone - trying new apps out, when I discovered after all this time something wasn't quite right (I'm not telling you exactly what it was but I could never connect online the certain accounts despite Login details being correct) - so much so that I had to resort to contacting HTC support

After several attempts suggested, the only last thing was to do a Hard reset
- so I thought 'Great good time to backup everything & clear out any crud that was left over from all those other apps I tried which I never liked/kept'

So I religiously went through backing up all my contacts, calender, SMS etc & I made a note of all the Apps I had installed,
& then I did a Hard reset......

...I tried out to see if the fault was cleared - & it was :yay: So I started to re-sync my contacts back & I get a 'Firmware Update' message for Android 2.3.3.(I guess my problem also affected that as well somehow)

So once again I thought - 'might as well update it before I install everything else' - And Off I go & do it
(OK - @ this point I forgot that updates ALWAYS bugger something up SOMEWHERE
bash.gif
)

I continued installing everything (Side note: has anyone noticed that Android Market only remembers the most recent ~35 apps you've downloaded ? - & I've downloaded 100's  ) & once finished that - started going through some of them to alter settings etc & what do I find.......

...... I HADN'T DONE 'S-OFF' !!!
for those that don't know 's-off' allows you to install custom ROMS onto the phone, something I never planned on doing anyway

Meaning that I couldn't root the phone to allow me to alter the HOST file - Droidwall doesn't work, & I can't block using Adfree

Now before anyone says it - Yes I KNOW I can 'downgrade', 'S-Off', & upgrade back to 2.3.3 etc, but all those
'adb push'/ 'shell' / './data/local/tmp/GingerBreak' stuff (such as shown here) I'm always worried about doing something wrong & bricking it
(& yes I know most of you will say 'it's easy to do & little risk of bricking' but there's STILL that 'little risk')

The guide I've linked to above 'seems' to be the most easiest method I've seen so far (apart from the 'Visionary+'/'Radio S-off' that is ;) ) some guides I've seen are spread across 3-4 webpages, (my 'build' is 2.36 so I think I should be OK)...
I'm also guessing that 'stock 1.32 PD98IMG.zip' file mentioned is actually a ROM file & not some type of 'header'/trick to fool the phone it has an older build, so I guess this guide actually downgrads the phone which'll allow me to S-Off (something I never planned on doing)

I'm guessing that if/once I've done this I can then just check for update & 're-do' the Official Android 2.3.3 update (again)... but I'm wondering whether I should take the (very small) risk

After all, I only want 'root' so that I can block those pesky ads from popping up in the 'free' games - which I can do just by switching off my Wifi/Date connection - I'm not planning to install Custom ROMS (I'd rather stick to manufactures upgrade - if things go wrong then I can blame them & not the other way round)

Oh forgot to mention - since my phone is an unbranded one - I guess I don't need a 'Goldcard' (whatever that is)

No one's really told me what's so great about Android. When I ask, they say: "cuz it's not apple" or "i can customize it, unlike crappy apple". Seems to me Android users just use it cuz they hate apple.

Some say cuz you can install 3rd party apps. I've heard most apps in the Android Market place aren't the best of quality.

And no, I'm not an iphone user. I have an 80 dollar nokia phone

if its a Desire HD lol you can get a free app from the market that can root whenever you want to
even turn on root on boot or turn off.
so you can install what you like then unroot and its all good

I hope you're not thinking of 'Visionary+' cos I've already tried that (r14) & all I get is black screens (that only works on 2.2 and not 2.3.3)

EDIT: Oh BTW - I thought I'll just 'try' the first few steps of that guide, just to see what happens....& for some weird reason my phone don't like those commands

Each 'adb' came up with a 'server out of date...killing' message & even if I carry on & do 'adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/GingerBreak' - that comes up with a message that 'Gingerbreak' cannot be found..... looks like I'm stuffed until there some update somewhere

This is why I recently switched to Samsung Wave :)

Like the latest iPhone/Android...but it'd be pointless to hack it so I'm not tempted to and the appstore is rubbish :P
