The Untold Odyssey - Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl

I recently got Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl and have decided to go through the story mode.

I have made it down to the 6th Floor and the first Geomagnetic Pole. I am enjoying the story so far, the characters are well-developed with their own distinct personalities and backgrounds. I often find myself even more attached to my fixed party of five then I usually am in other Etiran Odyssey games. So attached in fact, that if I carelessly cause a member of my party to die, I feel guilty for doing so, if I was only more careful I could have avoided it entirely.

The game has three difficulties; Picnic, which is like Etrian Odyssey IV's Easy Mode where if you whipe, you are sent back to town. Normal which allows you to re-do the last battle you whipped on one more time before getting a Game Over. Then there is Hardcore, which is the original Etrian Odyssey difficulty, no do-overs, you whipe, Game Over.

I of course am playing on Hardcore as the difficulty of Etrian Odyssey made the game more enjoyable. Taking on F.O.E.s knowing that if I whipe, it's over makes the fights more intense, and more fulfilling when I just barely take the beast with a few remaining party members barely alive.

The voice acting in the game's story mode is a nice touch as well, and gives the main characters in story mode more personality. Arthur's dismissive, yet headstrong attitude. Simon's Clam and Collected attitude. Raquna's Live life to it's fullest attitude. Then finally, Fredrica's curious, cute, and caring attitude.

My favorites so far are Raquna and Fredrica.

I like Raquna's friendly demeanor and how she tries to cheer up the group, although she tends to have too much fun sometimes.

I like Fredrica mainly because she is a cute one, and oftentimes will interact with the Highlander which makes her more likable. Also she is the only person that can use a gun outside of the Grimoire system, which is awesome!

Simon is a very intelligent person who has a personal notebook filled with documents. Simon will even sometimes give hints of a monster's weakness during battle. This has proved useful against monsters that I haven't fought against yet. I like how Simon is built as a hybrid Healing and Support class that can also be built with Grimoire Stones to deal some damage as well as heal.

Arthur, while full of himself at times, I find entertaining. His "Yeah whatever" attitude never tends to get on my nerves unlike other characters from Japanese, Console-Style RPGs have done so in the past. I guess I would be full of myself too if I was an awesome Alchemist like him and could exploit many monsters' weaknesses.

The only problem with the Higlander is that most of his voice clips are typical grunts heard from just about every "silent protagonist" ever. It would have been nice to hear the Highlander say things like: "Now I'm riled up" when using a boost, and things like: "Damn, this isn't looking good" and "I underestimated this one" when at low hp.

I have to say though; the story mode has held my interest more than the original game has. Perhaps it's the narrative that draws me in for longer sessions. Knowing who exactly is Fredrica, where she came from, or better yet, when she came from, and how is she connected to the mysterious ruined cyber-punk-ish Gladshiem Facility. Perhaps it's the new Gladshiem dungeon itself, or even the live and synthesized soundtrack! Whatever it is, I am enjoying Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl more than the original Etrian Odyssey. Index did a very good job with re-creating this game and adding in new features that both newcomers and veterans of the series can enjoy.

My only complaint the game is the lack of two save files. I would have enjoyed the game more if there was an ability to have one save file per mode, instead of just having one save file period. I guess this is in place to encourage players to play though story mode first (as it does so when you select classic instead of story on a fresh save.)

If I had to give it a score, I would give it a 9/10 the only thing holding it back is that save-file issue. It's an otherwise solid game that any Console-Style RPG fan may enjoy!

Ya know, I should do a video review of this game on Youtube. Not just any video review, but one with decent effort and production value. Best to keep an eye on my Youtube channel; Scythe Ironclaw just in case.

Atlus makes the games, Index just owned Atlus at the time, haha.

I agree with your "review" 100%! Excellent RPG.
