The reason why I believe the homebrew scene is dead and not coming back

After being out of the forum for quite a while for personal reasons, things have really changed around here.

Like expected, new exploits would appear, and this time, it was a massive one. But here's the catch: kernel access. Oh boy, that's why smea was trying to avoid it. Everybody went crazy, after downgrade utilities were released. But why downgrade? Will it make your system better? Will you have access to the Nintendo Network service? Nah, it's for one simple reason that everybody refuses to talk around here: piracy.

No, "backups" won't make you more legit, since it's still illegal to have a backup of a non-destructive media format and with copy protection (CDs, cartridges, etc), by some worldwide laws (check here). Also, you're just a little liar saying that you want to have copies of the games you "own". To say the truth, nobody really cares about homebrew. It's all about having free games and emulators at any time, anywhere, and people saw homebrew as a kind of a temporary solution for this.

Proof? Look at this forum. Less than one third of the topics from the first page are related to homebrew (excluding emulators, ugh), and most other topics aren't even supposed to be here. That's why I (and of what I saw, many other developers) gave up entirely on the scene for the system, and moved on into something better. And for me, it's really not coming back, since everybody will be satisfied with their free games and not caring anymore for new, unique and different projects.

Just my rant about the current situation. Please don't delete my topic or hunt me with pitchforks.

I could have. Why does it bother you so badly though? Would you prefer to banter pointlessly about how the dev scene is dying/dead? I mean I'm certainly not stopping you, comrade.

Question, are some people here actually debating anything, or just trying to validate/circlejerk their disdain for piracy? Because the "piracy kills homebrew" argument is pretty silly.

Debates have mediators, this is just bickering for the sake of bickering.

face it, *hax 2.5 is unstable and not suitable for homebrew. the main advantage it has is working on the latest firmware, and will always work on it.

one such example would be being able to use csnd:SND and http:C/soc:U together because your program is too large (WTF?).

also, if you want emulators, you gotta downgrade if you don't want shitty emulators (dynamic recompilation).

The homebrew that has been made so far is mostly tech demo or very amateurish "my first homebrew" type stuff, there wasn't much of a homebrew scene to begin with and it's not surprising that people would rather play high quality games.

Smea etc. can disagree all they want, but the fact is that mobile phones offer an easy way for hobbyist/amateur developers to get their games out to a large audience and the selection is much bigger. Anyone with a smartphone would rather develop for that and the games on it are much higher quality and many of them are free, the rest are very cheap. So why bother with homebrew games?

emulators ARE homebrew you tit
it will help the scene , "piracy" always helps , it alwasy helps when more consoles are exploitable and there is no worry about having to chose between games and homebrew

Well this forum started as a warez/piracy site for GBA roms!, you can't avoid the roots!
In some kind of way, homebrew always lead to piracy, you can't avoid that!

That's not true in the slightest. It just shows that you can't make an unsolvable puzzle. Why are walled gradens so accepted today? I blame the rise of the 'AppStore' fad.

What if I told you 3DS has been around for like 25 years and it's gonna be end of life by the end of the year? Exploits will just extend the useful life of the hardware we invested in 6 months down the road when NX makes it obsolete.

Of course it's gonna be dead if devs just stop bothering and leave >.>
Self-fulfilling prophecy anyone?

The 3DS is older than the N64 now? Alrighty then.

Well, good guessing Mr Obvious. We would have never know without you.

Everyone has its own flavor. There's people who don't like piracy but love homebrew, there's also people who don't care about homebrew and are all about piracy, then there's those who love both.

I'm the third type, in fact my first reaction was to aim for piracy since personal circumstances forced me to sell all my games not long ago, i'm slowly rebuying everything but, let's face it, when you have limited income every rebought game is a lost chance to get another game. I'm also interested in homebrew of course, i was there when the homebrew scene blew on Wii and enjoyed it in its full glory, and i'm of course willing to see how far can 3DS go.

And no, there's no shame on it unless you pirate EVERYTHING, wich any gamer smarter than a potato would avoid in order to avoid saturation. There's also lots of things that can be done with piracy, like using it to test a game before deciding if buying it or not.

Piracy has lots of shades, and it can be actually a good thing. How about those games that aren't aviable on the eShop and are near impossible to find on cartridge format. Sorry but i'm not willing to remove the earth for BlazBlue: Continuum Shift for example.
