Raiders of the Lost Ark: IMAXed out

So I figured I'd start chatting about movies and shows more so I created a dedicated blog to movies. Anyway, what better way to start it off than with the GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE.

I love Raiders of the Lost Ark, I will sing its praises until I can no longer sing (which is currently now since I can't sing for shit but you get the point). It's a fantastic movie and while I typically don't think that any age of movies, games, whatever is particularly better than another age, this movie is just of an age in film you don't see today. It's a gigantic production with so much care put into it. And to see this monumental film getting an IMAX re-release meant I had to see it. So I did.

At first I felt a little weary as the movie started out looking very grainy for the large screen. However, when it cut to the next shot, it was crystal clear. It was incredibly detailed, the movie didn't show its age. It could still pass for a big budget film to this very day. By the time the boulder dash scene hit, I could tell this was a great decision.

First off, the greatest part of Indiana Jones is the sound. It's masterfully mixed and the music is classic. There's a reason why John Williams is easily considered the best soundtrack artist of film. The IMAX experience here enhances all the sounds. Every whip crack, every rip-roaring musical score, every scream and explosion. All the audio feels very enhanced. Again, the movie doesn't show its age.

As I mentioned earlier, the film looks fantastic on the large screen. It seems like a lot of effort went into remastering this masterpiece. However, I did notice that some of the footage (mostly establishing shots for some of the unimportant seems) looked very old and grainy, almost like old stock footage. For example, when Indy is getting on the plane to Nepal early in the movie, it shows an establishing shot of the plane which looks rather crappy. However, 99% of the movie looks fantastic. The only real parts I could see as dated looking are the Staff of Rah scene and one scene during the truck chase. The effect of the beam of light from the Staff of Rah showing where the Well of Souls is in the map room looks really cheesy and there's some dated looking special effects in the car chase where a car is scene falling off a cliff and it's obviously edited in.

However, the movie is fantastic and the IMAX version is a real experience. For US audiences at least, it's in theaters until September 13th. Tickets are a bit pricey ($14 a ticket) but it's well worth it.

I would love to see these films for my first time at IMAX, but sadly there's none really near here, so I'll stick with the Blu-Ray release.

One thing though, I wonder if they're going to re-release Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in IMAX.

I really don't see the hate that movie got. People bitched about the plots, and some of the scenes (aka fridge + nuke = live). But anybody who actually watches the other Indiana Jones films will see that those movies are just as ridiculous with a just as ridiculous plot.

The first issue with Crystal Skull starts within five seconds of the movie: a CGI gopher.

Now this may seem like an insane nitpick but it really shows a lot of issues with the movie. Indiana Jones is kinda a lost era type of film that people don't do any more. It's a lot easier to use CGI than it is to build a set or go on location. It's not that CGI is bad, it's just bad when it comes to Indy. A lot of the charm from the movie comes from all these elaborate sets and locations and such. In Crystal Skull, it felt very shopped in.

A lot of the ideas in the film were great. Having an older Jones instead of just trying to make Harrison Ford look younger was cool. Having Russians as the new villain was cool. Having Karen Allen (Marian) come back was cool. But executed it just felt really half assed. Indiana Jones has always had some elements of silliness but a nuked fridge is a bridge fridge too far. People may equate it to the "life raft parachute" in Temple of Doom but Temple of Doom was a largely flawed film and it stands no where close to Raiders.

I mean there was that, there was the LeBouf monkey swinging, the water falls in a car, it was just too outlandish, even for Indy. The ending was also really silly. It was Ancient Aliens. Like I know that Indy isn't supposed to be very real with like the Ark of the Covenant, the voodoo and shit in Temple of Doom, and the Holy Grail in Last Crusade, but that all was grounded it legends and mythos very close to us (not Temple of Doom really but I don't think that's as good as Raiders or Last Crusade). Aliens was just a rather silly twist. I get that it was going on the whole 50's sci-fi mentality but Indiana Jones was never about that.

It just felt very soulless and flat compared to the other films. I definitely think that Spielberg in general has lost a lot of steam in the recent years. When he was a young, ambitious, new director, he did a lot of things that no one ever thought of and he was very daring. From Jaws to Indy to Jurassic Park to ET, it was all very masterful. But I can't think of anything memorable really in the past ten or so years by him, Crystal Skull included.

But my tl;dr would be that people think Crystal Skull isn't as ridiculous compared to like Temple of Doom but Temple of Doom isn't even that good. Raiders is on a whole new level, it's a masterpiece of a film.

This totally reminds me of your discussion

He really hit the head on the nail with that review. It does a good job of pointing out a lot of issues in Temple of Doom.

I wouldn't miss this if it came here. It's so sad to see young kiddos and teens of today not even know of this awesome movie.
Cheers.
