So I figured I'd start chatting about movies and shows more so I created a dedicated blog to movies. Anyway, what better way to start it off than with the GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE.
I love Raiders of the Lost Ark, I will sing its praises until I can no longer sing (which is currently now since I can't sing for shit but you get the point). It's a fantastic movie and while I typically don't think that any age of movies, games, whatever is particularly better than another age, this movie is just of an age in film you don't see today. It's a gigantic production with so much care put into it. And to see this monumental film getting an IMAX re-release meant I had to see it. So I did.
At first I felt a little weary as the movie started out looking very grainy for the large screen. However, when it cut to the next shot, it was crystal clear. It was incredibly detailed, the movie didn't show its age. It could still pass for a big budget film to this very day. By the time the boulder dash scene hit, I could tell this was a great decision.
First off, the greatest part of Indiana Jones is the sound. It's masterfully mixed and the music is classic. There's a reason why John Williams is easily considered the best soundtrack artist of film. The IMAX experience here enhances all the sounds. Every whip crack, every rip-roaring musical score, every scream and explosion. All the audio feels very enhanced. Again, the movie doesn't show its age.
As I mentioned earlier, the film looks fantastic on the large screen. It seems like a lot of effort went into remastering this masterpiece. However, I did notice that some of the footage (mostly establishing shots for some of the unimportant seems) looked very old and grainy, almost like old stock footage. For example, when Indy is getting on the plane to Nepal early in the movie, it shows an establishing shot of the plane which looks rather crappy. However, 99% of the movie looks fantastic. The only real parts I could see as dated looking are the Staff of Rah scene and one scene during the truck chase. The effect of the beam of light from the Staff of Rah showing where the Well of Souls is in the map room looks really cheesy and there's some dated looking special effects in the car chase where a car is scene falling off a cliff and it's obviously edited in.
However, the movie is fantastic and the IMAX version is a real experience. For US audiences at least, it's in theaters until September 13th. Tickets are a bit pricey ($14 a ticket) but it's well worth it.
