Yeah. Nobody has a problem with signing up on Google. The most normal thing in the world. Walking around with a device under control of an evil company monitoring literally every single step one does.
What could possibly be criticized about this?

I'm getting old! Feels like I'm a hundred years old (and yelling at clouds to bring in the stupid meme).

I'm not even angry. Just disappointed.

Just so you know, you can download apks / apps from the store without having to install the store - you can use Aurora Store, or download from a site like apkpure etc.
But I know what you mean.

Android an me never have been friends (understatement). I have looked into it a bit, installed Magisk and LineageOS on some test devices and downloaded stuff from APKPure, APKMirror, and F-Droid. Debloating Android devices is a major headache.
The concept of closed platforms (Android is by far the lesser evil compared to the fully closed Apple stuff) does not have any appeal for me. "Get […] on Play Store and Apple Appstore" is omnipresent in ever everyday life. Sometimes it feels that normal life demands owning a smartphone and accepting the shady TOS of US companies "for security reasons".

Not a big surprise homebrew community goes the same way. But not gonna lie: A huge disappointment they are jumping on the bandwagon, probably "to provide the easiest and most common way for average people".
