New Feature: Workspaces

OK, this might not seem very useful at first but I swear I use it every day. So does shaun.

What is this?
It's basically just an online notepad. Save text online, on a remote server. Limited to 128 kilobytes (128,000 characters) per member.
The whole point of this online notepad is that you can share it. You can give access to your workspace to any member you want, with read or write access, or simply let anyone view it.
At first thought, you may fail to see any application for this. Let me tell you some.
- Say you're chatting on some IRC channel and want to paste a huge text. You can't, because you'll get kicked for flooding. Solution: just go to your workspace, paste the text there, enable guest access, and paste the link to your workspace on the IRC channel.
- Shaun and I are going to the USA in no less than a week. We've been drawing a list of things to do in the different US cities we're visiting. Thanks to the shared workspace, both of us were able to update the list.
- In the early days of the tempcast, we used the same kind of online workspace to prepare our episodes. We would keep up a list of things to discuss in the upcoming episode. Now the tempcast guys have their own forum.
- A coder who wants to share a bit of code without having to save to a file and upload it or send it over IRC/MSN/*IM, may now simply use his own shared workspace.

And this is only a couple of possible uses. In time you might find your own.

How to access it?
One of the key points about this is that it can be accessed very easily.
Going to http://ws.gbatemp.net will take you to your own workspace (provided you're already logged in on the forums).
Accessing someone else's workspace can be done by adding the username to that same URL.
For example: http://ws.gbatemp.net/Costello will take you to mine. Shame you don't have access :P

I hear some people are having problems with subdomains.
If that's the case, you might just use the long URLs:
- Your own workspace: http://gbatemp.net/?act=module&module=ws
- Someone else's workspace: http://gbatemp.net/?act=module&module=...member=Costello (replace Costello with a member name).

Many thanks to Ace for his help on this new feature. Half of the options wouldn't be there if it weren't for him ;)

Any question/suggestion, reply to my blog article! :)

Sweet, this can come in handy for my new upcoming project :grog:

Oh, and you and Shauny-boy should come down South when you visit the US - the women are obese, the food is deep-fried and artery clogging, and to top it off we have an annoying accent. :grog:

But seriously, where are you guys going? (hoping it's near plattsburgh so I can visit :D)

Forgot to add, great idea!

They use it for sharing the Tempcast summary =), seen it once.
Thanks for the info chief.

While the effort is appreciated, I can't see this having any advantages over the more advanced offerings from the likes of pastebin and Google Docs...

Urza: then you need to be a little more open-minded :)
Here's an example. Everyone who reads my blog post probably already has an account on GBAtemp, while they don't necessarily have one on the other sites you mention.
It also feels kinda impersonal to use these other sites. Pastebin is more code-oriented, specifically. Google Docs is, well, too complex. Doesn't exactly fit my needs - yes, I originally did this workspace thing for my own use, but when I showed other people, they all wanted their own.
Anyhow, I don't consider it the same service.

PS: still it's nothing big. Big features usually make front page news. This one barely warranted a new blog article.

I know about the previous notepad-style thing we had on your personal control panel in which because it is not public I was able to store few of my favourite pornstar names. It will definitely become handy for me. :)

I love this, this could come in great use as long as it can save japanese text.
Will make sure to try out.

Thank you very much.

NTL/Virgin fails anyway

EDIT: It works using OpenDNS, haha

Excellent. I like to keep notes on troublesome members... and the CP notepad always erases my stuff.

It does? I still have stuff on there from my first year at the temp (4 years ago).

Anyway, awesome feature Costello/Ace! Great job :D
