My Parents

So, my mom has this rediculous idea inside her head, that if I listen to music such as Megadeth (anything within the genre of Metal) that I will become and out-of-control, irrate, and crazy person.

I'm not sure if it's a control thing, or maybe the fact that she can't see past the reputation that Metal has been given since it's launch. Listening to music like this isn't going to change my point-of-view.

Dang. That sucks.

My mom was rocking out to music from Hendrix to 80's hair bands when I was growing up, so I never really had to worry about my tastes in music being 'taboo'.

My parents don't care what kind of music I write or listen to, as long as it doesn't physically hurt me.

The question is, will they/you do anything about it? It IS just an opinion, but if it leads to action, let us know :)

Well it has turned to action. She took m iPod and deleting every song she thinks is "bad". I'm not sure what she's trying to accomplish, because I will always like Metal music. I think it's one of the genres that takes the most talent. Keep in mind that the only music my mom likes is Country and 80s Pop. She also thought I made up the term "Hair Metal".

I'm a good kid, I get good grades, I have a job, I always ask permission to go with friends. I don't drink, I don't do drugs, and I'm not allowed to have a girlfriend. Now she's trying to take my music.

she's just afraid of what she don't understand. metal do look violent at first. you need to know it first before you understand it. you've got explaining to do. a lot i think.

EDIT: you're not allowed to get a girlfriend? okay that sucks.

She walked away last time I tried to explain and give examples of why listening to Metal isn't going to turn me into a Satanist.

ahhh. that really sucks. i don't like metal but i don't hate it.

but having something you like taken away from you is painful. just gotta be hiding while listening to metal i guess.

A long time ago I made a thread not far off this and you referred to me as an 'emo kid'.
I remembered this for a long time for reasons beyond my understanding.
Either way, it's general ignorance and stupid at that. Akin to those people at school that believe all Death Metal enthusiasts slit their wrists.
Which is kind of like the ignorance you demonstrated in your post long ago.
So really it's just ignorance complaining about ignorance.

I don't recall calling you emo, and I would never call somebody tha listens to Death Metal emo. I'm apologize if I did, though.

I am in the same boat as twiztidsinz (maybe perhaps without 80s metal- some photos with what could be said to be a terminal case of 80s hair though). Afraid I have no real advice* on how to resolve this situation though- reason seems to have failed and it does not seem to be at the point where covert measures are required.

*I do have an experiment though- when the ability to easily overlay your chosen music appeared in games it was quite a head turner for games when you chose songs carefully.
Country/folk and 80s Pop certainly fed eras of metal and continue to do so (see there being a fairly big subgenre of metal called folk metal or if you must http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYJUywl7CFw and as for 80s pop well there are is loads of crossover- see much of the rate the song from the person before you thread) so perhaps find some stuff like that and try to blur the lines- Johnny Cash is a good start as I doubt you will find many metal bands who would not cite him as an influence somewhere along the line not to mention stuff like "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die"- a lyric from a 1955 track from Mr Cash. Tom Waits works if you want to push it further (he has been around for ages as well and been covered by loads of artists I imagine your mother would find agreeable if not already in her collection).
If you want to get really into it there is the likes of symphonic or orchestral metal- if it was not already evident that metal and rock in general used ages old musical concepts why not make it plain as day. Some choice songs (sans anything that might be considered "heavy" lyrics) and you can pull off the equivalent of playing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHNSD58NuSc...feature=related and getting someone who would say games have no merit to get egg on their face.
Not saying you have to like these artists (although some are legends for a reason mind) but it does provide an argument that is hard to ignore. You do however risk being called a cheeky bastard and to stop pushing things (at which point I would consider settling for a moral victory).

I am told it is something a tradition to sign off blog posts with a music video so fitting the situation

Avoid talking to her as much as you can, if she talks to you say as little as possible and walk away when you don't like the way the conversation is going -- kinda like what she did/does to you. If she's not going to be open to discussion, why should you?
See if you can crash at a friend's house for a few days and 'forget' to mention it. Or a few different friends.
Turn the tables. What she does to your music, do to hers. Change her radio stations (I know, "fucking evil", right?), misplace her CDs, etc.

"We're not gonna take it,
No! We ain't gonna take it.
We're not gonna take it anymore.

We've got the right to choose it,
There ain't no way we'll lost it.
This is our life, this is our song.
We'll fight the powers that be just,
Don't pick our destiny 'cause
You don't know us, you don't belong.

Oh we're not gonna take it,
No! We ain't gonna take it
We're not gonna take it anymore.

Oh you're so condescending,
Your gall is never-ending.
We don't want nothin', not a thing from you.
Your life is trite and jaded,
Boring and confiscated.
If that's your best, your best won't do!

We're right,
We're free.
We'll fight,
You'll see."

yup, 30084pm's right. it's crucial to play the right cards. based on what you said dangy, she's totally against metal, and will try to turn anything to oppose you.

I already listen to plenty of "normal" music. Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Madonna, Rush, Cher, Devo, etc. I don't strictly listen to JUST Metal.

Also, I can't view that video, it was blocked for copyright in the U.S. D:

Sorry I had not meant to imply you listened to nothing but metal just offering some things to try and blur the lines and provide a point of debate- I agree entirely that saying metal is likely to cause bad things is unjustified in the extreme and those people that think that way I tend not to get along with.

I had linked up a few videos so in order they appeared in the post
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYJUywl7CFw is Hayseed Dixie - Ace of Spades (Hayseed Dixie is a country band that tends to cover metal songs and they have done most of the classic metal songs)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHNSD58NuSc...feature=related was an orchestral version of the Zelda theme.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOCDoKsXjP0 was George Thorogood & The Destroyers - Get A Haircut
^ wouldn't that prove her point though?

yup, 30084pm's right. it's crucial to play the right cards. based on what you said dangy, she's totally against metal, and will try to turn anything to oppose you.
I'm assuming those are in reference to me... And you two would be right, except that it seems she has already made up her mind.
Discussion has failed and most likely nothing he says or does is going to change that, so why bother? Stop looking for understanding and 'distance' yourself (a child not speaking to his parent for a few days can have a profound impact) from those who don't want to accept you for who you are.

It's not like I'm telling him to dress in 80's Hair Metal style and go for the "Shock and Awe" effect of rebellion (but hey, if that's your thing I say go for it!), or skip school or be a jerk or something like that... I'm just saying that she need to be accepting of you and as the saying goes "you don't know what you've got til it's gone", maybe she just needs to see that if she doesn't change she could lose you (as in drive you away) and it could make her open to discussion.

"This above all: unto thine ownself be true"

true. you could do that, i just don't think it's worth the risk though, but i've been afraid of risks almost my whole life. i play as careful as possible.

but if he can take on the challenge, he may pull it off. it's up up to him.

haha. twiztidsinz... i just don't know what to say exactly but i'm glad we had this very short discussion.

Accepted and understood.
My parents are the same way when it comes to Metal. My Dad just thinks it's largely immature and my Mom thinks both this and that it can lead to disorders or what have you.

I'm also a fan of Phil Collins, and lots of other new pop-oriented bands.

CAKE, She & Him, Panic! At The Disco, and Pheonix are among my favorites.

I used to listen to George Thorogood tons when I was little. :3

Also, I wonder if she thinks that good music will make a good person.

Evil Music = Evil People.
Good Music = Good People.

Is that how it works?
