LTTP: Mass Effect

So I started Mass Effect (got it for free from Origin). Played about an hour or two of it.

- Gameplay just doesn't feel right. I'm not sure if it has to do with controls or the combat system but something just feels off.

- I can't auto-save everywhere?

- Visuals aren't really good. If there's one thing about most current-gen games, it's that they will not age well. Some of those faces make me cringe. Goddamnit Bioware, just use pre-rendered cut-scenes so I don't have to stare at David Anderson's ugly-ass face.

Maybe I'm judging it far too early but right now, it isn't looking good. I hope it gets better as I play through the rest of the game.

You're definitely judging the game too early. Also, no to pre-rendered cutscenes.

Also, I can't remember ME1 very well, but in ME2 and 3, you could just save from the pause menu then quit...

Gameplay in the ME games are some of the best I've ever played.

To be fair, the gameplay in ME1 isn't all that strong; the story pulls you through. It improves considerably in the next two games (albeit at the expense of some of the RPG aspects).

First game plays like a wet trout but it has an excellent story.

Second game plays awesome but it has an eh story.

Third game is like an orgasm.

First game is pretty crap. I actually fell asleep several times before finally just returning the game (rented it) because I was tired of playing a videogame version of a bedtime story/lullaby. Eventually did play through it again properly to see what all the white sticky stuff was about, but was not impressed.

Second and third at least have more interesting gameplay to mess with. Should just skip to them, I think they both have little story recaps you can watch...I think.

I applaud developers like Bioware for not using prerendered cutscenes. In-engine cutscenes give you a better sense of immersion, which is necessary for any game with a deep plot like Mass Effect or Half-Life (or arguably Halo).

Give Mass Effect a chance, I bought the first one for 9 bucks and now I own all 3 with all DLC and it has become one of my favorite series ever!

I think the graphics are awesome on ME1... highest settings and really high resolution makes it look great for me atleast :)
I think the graphics are awesome on ME1... highest settings and really high resolution makes it look great for me atleast :)
Yeah, some of the later areas are looking better. It's just that the first world that looked pretty bad.

Turning off the film grain also helped a bit.

they bought their own game on a key site and checked where they came from and it turned out they were review copies he had given out by email to someone
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    *all* of them
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
no storefront I'm aware of (at least on pc) requires the devs to pay for the keys they generate
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
they don't lose money doing this, even if someone decide to chargeback
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
so that seems to be a pretty common thing, i kinda blame the dev for that one though as they were giving out like 5 keys to someone just because they asked for multiple copies for review for whatever reason and there were multiple people doing this. he should've seen the red flags
  • linuxares @ linuxares:
@The Real Jdbye Yet devs tell US that they get charged possible charge backs? Its no idea we keep this up since I have to trust the devs more than key reseller sites.

  • linuxares @ linuxares:
(the chargeback is a penalty fee from the Credit card company, apparently around 30$)
