Do video games cause violence?

Sorry for bringing up this issue again, but I have to write an essay for english and this is probably one of the best places to ask.

Personally, I do NOT think games cause violence. If someone does and blames it on Call of Duty or something, then that person has a mental issue to believe that the elements of a GAME can be applied to real life.

Pleas vote in the poll and give your reasons. Thanks, Tempers!

EDIT:

I was told of this very informative video. WARNING: The host swears A LOT.

EDIT #2:

My Intro to Mass Communications teacher gave me this link:

http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&pid=g...ALMBkhenlMlKthQ

It's a google docs PDF full of statistics on gamers. Some of which I found very interesting:

1. %40 of gamers are female - That's a LOT higher than I thought!

2. The average age of a gamer is 39 - Also a LOT higher!

3. The best-selling genre in 2008 was "Family Entertainment" (19.3%), while "Shooters" only got 10.9%

4. The type of online game played most often: PUZZLE, at 44% blink.gif (RPGs only have 21%, and that's COMBINED with action, sports, and strategy!)

All in all, VERY interesting...

Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball 2 makes me spank my monkey, violently. Therefore, I'd have to say, yeees, they do cause some degree of violence, somewhat.

On the back of a Game Informer, there was an Ad saying that Some Politicians Are Blaming The ECONOMY on VIDEO GAMES. And that Video games are like Guns, And Drugs. THOSE RETARDS!

Cool, an essay abou Violence and Games, good luck on that one.

This is my two cents about this subject:
Do games cause violence? No, but easly impressive people, like the really young ones (or with some kind mental disfunction) should not play any kind of game without supervision, not to mention the violent ones.
You see, is is too difficult to imagine that someone easly impressive may believe that if you jump on a turtle (stomp) it will recoils itself for the inner shelf so yuo can just grab it and throw at someone, after playing Mario Bros.?
There is a classification for each game, and as it was already mentioned, blaming games for violence is a torrid excuse for lack of parental adivise an guidance.
I do admit that playing violent games may get you less sensitive about gruesome stuff depending of your age, but it will never (in normal conditions) incite someone to actually commit murder or some atrocious actions.
If you are to belive that games can actually make someone more violent than it really is, then you are also to believe that you can feed your pet whenever want, not when it's hungry (Nintendogs), or you can cut woods and explode mines to get resources (Age of Mythologies or any other RTS game), or even better, that you can just enter anyone's house and get money or itens from their closets (RPGs).

Well, that's my two cents. Again, good luck on your essay.

if the question suggests whether video games by themselves do cause violence, i would strongly dement it, they could never, really never be the only cause of people getting angry and murder or walk around beating up peoples, there are always other primary reasons which, couldn't be obvious directly, and activate the drive of violence. this causes could be bullying, isolation, racism, bad education, cracked family strings, stress, and other ways of mental pressure. so aggressive video games could be the last indicators which push people who are prestressed in that way and overfilled of bad emoitions into direct violence. on the other hand video games could also function as a filter to abolish the mental pressure indirectly. it's not rigth to put all the fault on video games, because its not proved, but as people naively do select the most simplistic possibility, although they are absolutely clueless it end up like this;.... god damn:.

In the long-term with HUGE results no. But I notice that while playing fighting/fps games people usually tend to get very angry when they get killed or lose the game. This is short term though.

Amen brother! (or Sister, i dont know  ) All of that is true. Except even when my brother paly LITTLE BIG PLANET, he gets angry for not Acing the level.

I did 2 essays on the same subject in college in different classes. One was for persuasion, and the other was something like persuasion. I ended up getting an 'A' on both of them. One teacher liked it so much that she printed a copy of my paper and gave it to another student as an example, she gave me an 'A' for the class when I should have gotten a 'B'.

I still have the papers saved, I did them last year. Would post it here, but I don't want people copying my work and saying it's theirs.

no way!
if anybody says otherwise, i'l rip out their throat and....

umm... i mean, "of course not"
I just got back from abusing children and beating up prostitutes because watching lolis in IDOLM@STER and playing GTA wasn't enough.
Two things that never supposed to mix.

I just got back from ordering a small village to be wiped out because the sight of destroyed villages and bases in Front Mission 2-5 didn't satsify me enough.

People that blame video games for violence are looking for an easy scapegoat, or because they're too old/traditionalist to understand that video games are expanding into territory (games that have some of the good 'ol ultra-violence) that have always been seen as socially acceptable.

Look at A Clockwork Orange (novel/movie) or Lolita (novel).

These examples were made before video games were created.

EDIT: However, young minds have always been malleable and easy to mold. Example - Die Welle. So caution should be taken when introducing subjects to young children or teenagers.

I read clockwork orange before, didn't really like the novel and the other is practically the reason for all the messed up stuff that happens today, the absolute root of the problem.

wow, left for a few hours and now there's 3 pages... guess I hit a sore topic with GBAtempers...

But please people... my college professor is going to be reading this. Please don't leave immature posts about how you killed people for the fun of it. It makes me look bad, you look bad, and GBAtemp in general look bad.

I figured I'd make a thread and poll showing that normal, everyday gamers know the difference between real life and video games.

I only used this as a reference in the essay, but knowing my Prof. she'll look it up. I'll just warn her about the "sarcastic" people.

(edited for grammar)

Games don't necessarily cause people to do violent things and if they do i blame their parents for not raising them right...i don't let my daughter play anything that's not suitable for her there's a reason that games have ratings on them.If someone is already violent i wouldn't want to give them a game that would make them want to do more violent things.I think a lot more parents should be monitoring what their kids play.
No only idiots who ask stupid things and do stupid shit cause violence.
yeeaahh... definitely something an English professor would like to see...

No... Violence causes Video Games....

Seriously, Slavoj Zizek once wrote something tangentially on the topic -- I can't give you a reference, as I've read about 20 of his books and it is all a blur...

People's assertion of dominance/violence in video games (and through the use of other media) is a reflection of their desire for authority/dominance/violence -- they may otherwise be prevented from behaving in this manner in "reality" (due to social/legal/financial constraints)... but the violence/dominance is already there...

So -- if you kill hookers, etc, in GTA -- then you, Sir, are a killer-at-heart...
