I have been in contact with the owners of BatteryCheck and I got permission to share the download for the game! They do want me to add a disclaimer that it's not official and they are not responsible for the download. So I need to come up with a good text to go with it...and then maybe hopefully I could add it to the download section on this site!
They also gave permission to use the games graphics and create smaller icons for use in the homebrew channel, homebrew launcher of the systems I have ported my version of the game to. So I am really happy to provide a nice little icon with the logo of the game without issues in the next release! Also sharing pictures and video's on youtube is allowed!
The main condition for everything is that I do not mention their name and make it clear this is a homebrew project and not initiated by them. They are also not responsible for any issues/questions regarding the downloads or my versions of the game. Makes sense to me and I will go through my threads and see if there are any references to them that might suggest otherwise.
Since making video's take time the only thing ready to be shared is something I have been working on. It's a technique called "sprite dicing" and I learned about it from this presentation here. It's also very similar to how the tilemap's work for the level's but this time using it for the sprites! What is done here is split all sprites into 8x8 pixel blocks and if it's unique add it into a texture. If a block is already found on the texture it's only stored once to safe space! The biggest saving comes from the empty room around the sprites and it's almost like some kind of compression algorithm.
I really wanted to use this method and to test it out I wrote a python script that implements it and shows it in action! Unique blocks are marked in red and if they are duplicates they are marked in green. As you can see in the video below nearly 50% is reusable since these sprites are very similar between the frames of the animation. To test how to make and edit video's I captured the python script running and then added some royalty free music to it. Uploaded it to my youtube channel and here it is:
I am not talking in this video at all and there is no text banners too. All that is hard to do right...so just the video to show what's happening
While I do plan on creating more gameplay video's it's going to take a while I think.
