Completed The Last of Us (SPOILERS)

Played it on PS4 and going to summarize my thoughts below,

- From a gameplay and visual perspective, it was good. Granted I switched to easy mode cause fuck clickers and bloaters but stealth mechanics were good, AI seemed fine, and overall it controlled well. And for a remastered PS3 game, graphics-wise, it looked damn fine. Character models even looked better than some native PS4 games, in particular, Infamous Second Son.

- Story. The game starts off incredibly strong with that intro sequence and maintains that pace for most of the game. While it features the usual zombie tropes (oh my god cannibals, shes the magic cure to everything), for the most part, everything was executed splendidly.

Of particular note, is the whole Winter sequence in the game where you control as Ellie. That was all done incredibly well and that last boss fight was one of the most intense sequences I've played in a videogame. Loved what Naughty Dog did there. And the mid-game arc with the guy and his brother was done really well.

The ending though, I find issue with. I don't know, I was hoping for more then what we got. Not to go for all the usual zombie genre cliches but I think Ellie dying would have made for a much better ending. And while Joel is never portrayed as a "good guy" in the game, I'd prefer if there was an option not to massacre those doctors at the end.

It all just ends rather abruptly. Joel escapes the Firefly Lab, shoots whatsherface, "I swear", fade to black. There's no real emotional gut punch, nothing that satisfyingly concludes the characters arcs, it's just, "The End". Comparing it to another zombie game, The Walking Dead (season 1), I have to say that Telltale concluded their story much better. That's not to say that the story in The Last of Us is bad or anything but just that the ending feels kinda underwhelming.

Comments

The ending was really rushed, poorly thought out and really broke Ellie's character.

I seem to recall hearing they wanted to make TLOU a trilogy, so that's probably why the ending was abrupt. But still, yeah. I hated the ending. It was done horribly and it was like they just said "fuck it" at the end.
