Is this generation of gaming all about graphics now ?

a little bothersome . . .
no one seems to understand their own meaning towards what gaming is anymore . usually you'd hear :
- "oh it had a great story line"
- "the character development was pretty good"
- "i need the soundtrack of the game"
- "there is so much replay value in this game !"

or anything from the game that made it feel like a game . nowadays , whenever i watch a trailer , all i read are people complaining about graphics are comparing to another game , only graphically wise . it's easy to ignore , but it's caught my attention that so much people always compare the graphics of one game to another . is this what today's generation of gamers has come to ? what ever happened to liking the story line , or the soundtrack or anything else other than graphics ? i understand that graphics play a big role now for this generation BUT is it really necessary for graphics to be the only thing people care about ?

not just that , so much people [specifically anyone under 16] are so saturated with guns . it's all about Modern Warfare 3 , Battlefield 3 blah blah blah . oh Battlefield is going to knock MW3 out of the sales with their graphics , MW3 is going to own BF3 . it's all the same thing over and over again . feels more like a bandwagon than anything else for games . if someone gets a game , then everyone else gets the game . however , they'll probably have no true personal interest towards the actual game .

:\

just my opinion and thoughts .
what do you guys think ?
Actually, I very much disagree with this. Generally, games that are all graphics and no substance are usually exposed and bitch slapped for the shitty game they are. It's always been like that. Of course there's always the vocal minority of people who care for nothing but graphics, however, many people of GBAtemp GROSSLY exaggerate their encounters with such "graphics whores". If anything, this generation of gaming is more geared towards the casual audience than anything else.
I agree with nutella. And with the anti-FPS feeling here is ridiculous, I'm not a fan of FPS I acknowledge Halo and CoD as being solid games though rehashed as fuck.

And Catboy, I really have to disagree with you on online gaming. I can play with my friends even thought they live on the other side of the country and I can play GTA with Tempers. This interconnectivity makes online a fantastic addition to gaming.

Most games these days only focus on online content or only have online multiplayer. What happened to offline multiplayer?
Edit: Although I really don't want to derail this thread with a multiplayer argument since honestly we will be here all day and this thread will end up locked. Please ignore me.

It's a new era. No one wants to go over their friends house and sit in their living room to play split-screen games when they can do it from the comfort of their own bedroom. Between me and my friends, we often hold little game tournaments at my one friends' house, usually on his birthday and stuff, and it's fun to have everyone right there.

Online isn't bad though, but I agree that a lot of devs focus more on the online aspect than single player. Possibly to increase replayability, who knows.

what I've learned is that the trend leans towards first person shooters, and games that have a multiplayer experience. I think the social aspect of gaming will become increasingly important, just as a certain caliber of graphics is expected in 2011.

No. It's not about the graphics.
It's the kids who care just about them and just talk about them. You have to know where to look for opinions.

The music nowadays are just pieces of crap.
The OST from Portal 2 is fan-fucking-tastic. Take that back

I mention a game. Instantly, I am bombarded with an idiot's thought processes, which go a bit like:

*thinking*
Yeah, but it isn't HD then!
*feels proud*

This is about sums it up quite nicely.
"Gamers" nowadays only care about what the game looks like and if it can play online. Which is the reason most of the games suck nowadays.
I agree, it's more the gamers that are corrupted. All they really care about are graphics, shooters, Online Play, mainstream games, Xbox and PS3. Seriously, go up to a mainstream gamer and ask them if they know what The World Ends With You, The Sims, or Chrono Trigger is. 99 times out of 100, they'll have no idea, and possibly may know what The Sims is. It's hard to find gamers in my generation that actually have taste in games rather than just going to "what's popular" or "what looks cool"

If the current technology allows beauty graphic environments, then why not? I love retro stuff, heck I even have my Nintendo 64 + Starfox64. But varying visual environment as long as gameplay goes well balanced, then I´m completely with it.

machomuu, taste is subjective. You can't go to people and think negatively at them for having no interest in games you like. I can understand why people find shooting shit up is more fun then grinding your levels. For example you may like The World Ends With You, I found it to be decent game at best with a generic protagonist. I think Uncharted 2 is one of the best games ever made, I think it has excellent gameplay, fun characters and a good online system. But you might dismiss it because its a Third Person Shooter with online mode.

Every time I see a topic like this, I begin to think:
"How come I've never met anyone like this?
Does the TC and all the commentors only know folks like that or something?"

Or else is it one of those "I do feel quite elitist because I've played games older than people I talk to. When the people I talk to don't like them, I feel the need to react and claim that they're simply too young to like it or something of the sort."

But, I can't downplay the face that there ARE folks who say this. Just... Not as many as every topic ever about this makes it out to be.

My friend: FF7 NES? Why would you play that when you could play it on the Playstation?
-Note: Nobody we know owns FF7 and there is nowhere to buy it from around here-
Me: Why can't I play it on whatever I want?
My friend: Because the NES's graphics are old. How can you stand playing games on anything before the Gamecube?
Me: I can't play the Playstation version on my DS. I can only play the NES version.
My friend: Of course you can, the graphics are the same. You'll thank me when you get better graphics. The game's no good otherwise.
-The rest of the time there was spent trying to convince him that just because I had an R4 doesn't mean I can play PS1 games.-

-Later, we had an argument about graphics-

Me: What's better? Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars or Final Fantasy XIII?
My Friend: Final Fantasy, duh.
Me: Why?
My Friend: It looks much prettier and I can stand to play it for hours.
Me: Do you even care about the storyline?
My Friend: Yes I do. I mean, come on, Terra and Aqua are badass.
-At this point I have a 'Are you kidding me' look-
Me: Those are Kingdom Hearts characters.
My Friend: Kingdom Hearts is the same thing as Final Fantasy, it doesn't matter who they are.
Me: Why do you say that?
My Friend: The graphics are similar. That means they're in the same series, right?
-At this point, I gave up and left his house.-

-I found him playing Final Fantasy 1 on the NES the next day-
Me: The GBA Remake was better
My Friend: No it isn't.
Me: But it's got better graphics.
My Friend: Just because the graphics are better doesn't mean the game is better.
-I haven't talked to him since-

He needs to get his game together and make up his mind.

I think you misunderstand, because I'm not saying they have bad taste, I'm saying they have no taste. Literally no taste, I mean, not "taste so bad it shouldn't even be considered", I mean they follow and look for certain things that meet the criteria that I listed, they don't need taste as those things satisfy them already. Sorry, it's my fault for not elaborating.

I wont say anything bad about FPS or TPS, one of my favorite shooters is Goldeneye 64 and I agree, Uncharted 2 is an excellent game, I also am a big fan of Halo (I love the 1st one, not so big on the others). Also, I used TWEWY because it is a popular RPG, not necessarily because it's a good game.

"You know why that game was great? It was because of the fog effects! It was because of the destructible environments! It was because of how you can see every strand of hair on that character’s head! Yeah!"

Fuck this. Give me back my arcade games.
Fair enough but what is "bad taste?"
Well I guess that can't really be measured by a human. I mean, it's never really fare to say "someone has bad taste because they like bad games" because that's an opinion and it's not humanly possible to decide which games are bad and which aren't.

Funny, since The playstation came out before the Gamecube, and FF7 is only available on the PS1 correct?
Disregard that I'm dumb.

Oh. My bad then.

Is this generation of gaming all about graphics now ?

Honestly, I dont have a HD console and a powerful computer and never played a HD game (yes I'm a typical Nintendo "fanboy" or actually I never had enough money for more than one console) and I am sick of bad graphics, framerate issues etc. I want awesome graphicz! So I think I will buy a HD console this year.
