If you haven't read about this on various anime sites then this may be new however if you have, you know we're in deep shit.
Those politicians just approved the bill that would regulate anime and manga. The bill would label any anime, manga, and even video games that have too much violence or sexual content as adults only. However there is a chance the bill will be abused and if that happens there goes all three mediums because directors, mangaka, and game designers will have to abide by the insane law. What this means is pretty much manga such as To Love Ru will be cancelled due to no publisher support or becoming R-18+ and games such as Criminal Girls and Doki Doki Majo Shinpan will be Z rated (18+). Oh yeah those harem type RPGs like Luminous Arc will be phased out or rated Z as well. Also, some games you wouldn't think of getting that rating such as Final Fantasy and the Tales of series will be affected. This will also have serious economic impacts too such as the loss of jobs for mangaka, seiyuu, game designers, and directors unless they produce their mediums within the law (which isn't much under this law). Although this will mostly affect the Tokyo area, be warned that the ripple effect of this bill will be felt anywhere there are anime fans (so people in North America and Europe must be exceptionally concerned) due to the fact that it will drastically reduce anime titles that are localized in each region. Also anyone outside of Japan for example wants to make a manga there must abide the law as well.
The bill is so detrimental that even the Prime Minister wants international support against the bill and you can aid in his cause by writing an E-mail to the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly (google the English language version of the site for contact info). Do note if you do this you must write in a calm and respectful manner since remember the fate of not only the anime and manga industry is at stake but a good part of the Japanese economy as well. The evil politicians who side with the bill think that both anime fans and gamers are the ultimate evil that must be stopped. I suggest you start writing unless you want crapastic anime, manga, and crappy Japanese RPGs.
Here's the E-Mail directly from the English version of Tokyo Government's English site if you want to write an email
