Why I Don't Like BotW Combat

View attachment 261725

I just find it slow, awkward, and just nasty to use; previous games had far faster and more refined combat systems. Sure, this is with a Rusty Broadsword (not any lategame weapon), but if combat feels downright awful at the very beginning, where's the incentive to go farther?
Sword swings are way to wide and sluggish to feel good, and it takes way too long to kill a single Bokoblin, not to mention the stupid fragility ("badly damaged") that robs you of your weapon after a few measly hits. Oh, and spin attacks aren't fluid; they have to be charged, and they use up the idiotic limited stamina.

Meanwhile, Twilight Princess craps all over BotW's combat - even with the starting Wooden Sword (which is given to the children rather quickly, and replaced with the Ordon Sword not long after), fighting Bokoblins is fast, fluid, and comfortable. Spin attacks can be comfortably used without needing to charge, and basic sword swings are much tighter and faster - not to mention the complete absence of weapon fragility.

Oh, and Twilight Princess just looks far nicer than BotW (and Pokemon Legends) ever could; the former game has a superior art style, and does not take place in an empty, barren wasteland.

@The Real Jdbye All of nintendo's franchises have taken a quality dip in some shape or form- even Mario.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe isn't as good as the previous games that came before it- the level design in the kart tracks is overly linear- so you just end up coasting along the track as the game moves you through it. There are barely any alternate paths or open areas like there were in Mario Kart Wii and it overall just feels boring even with the anti gravity gimmick. Also, none of the ultra shortcuts or expirimentation that led Mario Kart Wii to stay alive to this day is still there- you have to race the tracks the way nintendo intended for you to do so, no other way is allowed or is visible. SRB2kart and most of the other Mario Karts are far superior games.

Pikmin 3 isn't as good as the first 2 originals- Pikmin 1 required a lot of thinking since you have a thirty day limit that essentially forces you to work as efficiently as possible. Pikmin 3 adds supplies, which does force you to go through the levels to find resources in order to stay alive, but it isn't as challenging as the hard 30 day limit. Pikmin 2 also had product placement that somehow managed to be endearing and made sense in the game's world. Pikmin 3 just sort of has none of that and is basically a worse regurgitation of what 1 started, with none of the enhancements from 2.

WarioWare Gold, while a fine game, doesn't compare to a game like WarioWare DIY which basically allowed you to make your own minigames using a code blocks engine. This concept has never been explored in the warioware games series ever since DIY which sucks because it's legitimately an amazing game.
On the Topic of Wario, Wario Land 4 was legitimately one of the best games on the GBA and was such a great puzzle platformer. There was also Wario World for the GCN which was also extremely overlooked and underrated. no games since 2008 though, yay nintendo!!!!

Metroid hit it's prime (hah, get it) in the 2000s, ever since then it's been on a downward spiral. Other M released which was actually a fucking disgrace to the entire series, federation force was a thing that no one wants to remember, and AM2R blows Samus Returns out of the water- there's no arbitrary melee counterattack that bogs down the gameplay and the game is a lot more like what we wanted, a remake of metroid 2 that tries to take all the cues from zero mission. It's honestly as about as dead as F-Zero to me, which luckily never suffered the industry wide media degredation of the 2010s because it literally just didn't exist in the 2010s.

Smash Bros... do i even need to explain this one? Melee was the best in the series and ever since then no game has ever been able to recapture what made melee so great. Brawl had a nice aesthetic and subspace, but it was ultimately the first of the smash games that dumbed down melee. Smash 4 was overly slow and kind of boring, and was surprisinly better on 3ds than on Wii U. The only reason the Wii U version was played more was because it was on a console and not a handheld with an overly small screen like the 3DS. As for ultimate, it makes an attempt, but the gameplay is basically just a faster version of Brawl and 4s, which still doesn't include any of the technical skill and strategy required to play a game of Melee. Also the roster is just clogged with fire emblem characters.

I can't really say much about Kirby Star Allies since i haven't gotten that game, but what i can say is that planet robobot and Triple Deluxe, as good as they were, don't compare to Super Star Ultra, which is on my list of my favorite games of all time. Super Star Ultra had a lot of games in one, all ambitious in their own right. Spring breeze was your simple introductory game and Dynablade mixed it up with even more enemies and harder combat- plus an overworld map. The great cave offensive is a literal Kirby Metroidvania where you go around looking for treasure while exploring an extremely huge cave with many different enemies and threats. MIlky Way Wishes REMOVES the copy ability and forces you to be a lot more conservative with your powerups, because once you lose them it's much harder to get them back. Gourmet Race is super fun and a nice little game where you race dedede to the end, and as short as it was, it was still very challenging. And then there's revenge of meta knight which is literally a ship infiltration where slowly take down the ship before it ends in a sword fight between you and MK. No Kirby game has ever been that badass before, and none has been that badass ever since.

The sheer ambition that Super Star Ultra (and the original for that matter) had sets it apart from every other kirby game and what leads it to in my opinion be the best in the series.

I would love 4K60 or even 1080p60 but devs are prioritizing resolution over framerate and on consoles, you usually don't get a choice in the matter... Nor can you lower the settings to improve the framerate without sacrificing resolution, most of the time. I don't know why that's not the norm on consoles like it is on PC.

@64bitmodels Note I said mainline Mario games. Mario Kart is a spinoff. That said Mario Kart Wii is not an example of a good Mario Kart game to me, I hated half of the stages. I couldn't tell you why I hated them, I guess I just didn't like the layout. So we are probably never going to agree about anything related to that. I enjoyed Mario Kart 8 a lot, but it didn't seem any different than any other Mario Kart games, really. Just a new (and rather fun) gimmick and I was glad they made the Retro (SNES/GBA) stages more interesting as I was bored of all the flat stages that all look similar. I just play whatever the newest Mario Kart is and usually have a great time. Only one I keep coming back though is Double Dash and occasionally 64 so I guess they did something right. When the next Mario Kart comes along I probably won't touch MK8 again.

If BotW (and 2) end up being the only Zelda games with the open world gameplay I'll probably look back on them fondly as doing something different and making me feel a way I haven't felt like I when I haven't played OoT/MM and WW as a kid. That sense of wonder... It was my first time playing an open world game that I actually enjoyed so it was a completely new experience.
If they improve on the formula further and show us the best of what open world Zelda can be, I'm probably never gonna go back to BotW again TBH.

I don't like Melee. Not because the gameplay is bad, it's just because everyone who plays it is too damn good at it and I don't have a chance. Plus I like the huge selection of characters and stages in 4 and Ultimate and the customizable music. Melee fans want every Smash game to be exactly like Melee, but there's a whole separate fan community for Smash 4/Ultimate and separate tournaments for it so objectively it must have done something right. The techniques aren't the same as Melee, but don't be fooled, there are skill based techniques pro players are figuring out - it just hasn't had as much time for those techniques to be developed, Melee is much older after all.

I heard Kirby Star Allies is really short. But then they added free DLC that kind of made up for that. I haven't played it though. But the common complaint was that it was too short to be worth the asking price but other than that a fine game.

Other M is a spinoff and an almost universally hated one at that. Same with Federation Force. But that's how it is with spinoffs, they're usually different from the main series in some ways that often cause them to be disliked. So we haven't really had a new proper Metroid since 3 and that was on the Wii. And then we get stuff like that which nobody asked for. Can't blame Metroid fans for getting mad. 4's probably going to be great though.

honestly other m wasnt that bad, just not as good as the others. then again i played it after the drought so idk

"Opinions make the world go 'round", so to speak. It's always nice to hear a dissenting opinion that lists some actual data.

I'm not going to weigh in with an opinion as to the quality of this game, instead I'm going to point out some objective facts.

Spin-attacks can in fact quickly come out with a quick-spin, at least for one-handed swords (like the aforementioned Rusty Broadsword.) This maneuver is incredibly helpful in the [dev-described] 'puzzle' that is early BoTW combat.

Also note that, sometimes, as with RPGs as well, the answer to some combat can simply be "no," or, "not right now." This is an intended mechanic and eschews the 3D Zelda standard of being godlike with [less] thought-driven combat. (Being godlike is also a power-trip from which much enjoyment can be subjectively derived.)

Enemies are not randomly strewn about in BoTW; they are in fact specifically placed in exact locations. Often to taunt the player, but this is not random.

The map does have markers in both pin form and stamp form. It's quite an extensible format that can be used casually to great effect.

I agree with Louse. Other M was a decent game and I think "almost universally hated" is an over-exaggeration. Federation Force on the other hand, was in fact pretty bad.

@D34DL1N3R nah i liked fed force too. played it solo and enjoyed my time with it. 6/10: shoulda been announced alongside sames requiem

Okay, what the heck just happened? I last replied yesterday, and somehow two more pages of replies appeared in just over 24 hours.

I did not think this blog post would be so 'popular'; thank you, I guess???

@K3Nv2 He was looking into consoles for his house anyway (for my younger siblings and himself) and I had a spare XSX and Switch I ended up selling him at pretty steep cuts. I would just give them to him, but I did buy them with the intent to sell them... and college is super expensive.
