I am haunted by UK geography

While attempting to request more hardware for GBAtemp's review center, I found myself contacting a company in hopes of getting a review unit of something pretty cool. After a few days of waiting, I got a response. And it has haunted me, leaving me constantly thinking about it. In the deepest stretches of night, I will ponder this conundrum, and lay awake for hours just asking, "why?".

What could possibly mess me up so badly? Let me tell you, dear GBAtemp users.

This company is located in Scotland. They were fully ready to ship us the item, at least, until I provided a shipping address to the UK.

Their response was that they can't ship overseas to the UK from Scotland.

Scotland...overseas...from...UK.

As an American, I can say that I don't know much when it comes to UK geography, but I was almost certain that Scotland and the UK shared the same landmass. Perhaps I had been wrong this whole time? And Scotland really was adrift, floating somewhere in the distance, across the sea from the UK?

I checked maps. I found the HQ of the company. It's all land. There's no ocean between the two.

Hi Krista,
Thanks for getting in touch and for considering x!
This sounds like a great opportunity, however as you're aware, we are located in Scotland and don't actually deliver overseas to the United Kingdom (although we hope to do so in the future). I'm sure we'd love to get involved in something similar but until then it's not going to be possible for us.

It's been bothering me for weeks.

Has Scotland become upset with the UK and decided to fly away to become their own territory?

Did they take Brexit so literally that they broke apart from the continent and decided to live life on the seas?

Why. How. When. What.

This does not make any sense and most likely the company isn't actually in Scotland.

Royal Mail is Royal Mail. domestic prices, no reason not to post to another part of the country.

source: am in UK, have never heard of this

That is indeed quite confusing

Now I am wondering if the Scottish are trying a new disinformation campaign since the independence referendum failed

Clearly someone turned that segment of land into a sticker and Paper Mario just never bothered to stick it back into reality because of all the backlash his latest games have gotten.

It's about as confusing as Amazon listings (or other sites) that state they won't ship to PO Box addresses, yet they'll still hold your package at the post office.

OK as the temps resident Scottish person let me try and explain some things. The Royal mail are cunts they refuse to deliver or collect packages in certain parts of Scotland. They charge extra postage charges to send something to or from certain parts of Scotland. None of this happens anywhere else in the UK. Why because they refuse to actually have to drive some of our mountainous roads and countryside.

You sometimes see it for all the odd islands that make up the UK (the Isle of Man being a fun one for a lot of things) and there might be some fly by night package delivery company that only does Scotland (there are some dodgy ones these days but it is usually that they only have depots ages away from the delivery location so if you miss them brush your front gate to say they tried then you are going far). Scotland itself can also have some issues with the highlands for a package for certain things but for a package for anything to review around here I am shocked. Did we move on from tables to full lounges or something?

"an address in the uk" probably refers to another staff member who she had intended would receive and review the product

Ask them specifically why they can't ship from the UK to the UK.

I'm curious what their response will be.

Think I should point out, as nobody mentioned it, that Scotland IS in the UK. So is Northern Ireland. I think people are confusing UK as being England only. The full title is “The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. (In case of further confusion, Great Britain comprises of England, Wales and Scotland).

That's like saying "We can't ship from the United States to Canada due to there being a very tall wall right at the border on land that planes can't pass through, and even though we're based in Michigan and are near a hole in the wall where the Great Lakes are, we can't ship to Ontario due to the fact that there's a big sea monster in each lake that eats boats for lunch!!!"

You know what this sounds like? Stupid red tape. It's the only explanation.

Well the difference here is Scotland is part of the UK, so using examples of separate sovereign nations isn't really accurate

It's more like California refusing to ship to Oregon - it's ridiculously bizarre

Okay, I amend... "We can't ship from the United States to the United States because CANNOT MOVE PACKAGE: Location 'us' is a country." Wait, what? Are we dealing with robots, now?!?
