Info for those curious + Getting back into it

I know this is extremely odd for me, but I've felt for a while that I should've given some sort of explanation to my users. If you don't know who I am, I am the author of JKSM, an early 3DS homebrew save manager.

I never intended to disappear and leave JKSM in the state it was in. I wanted it to support it as long as the 3DS was still alive and kicking. Around October of 2016 I began revamping the UI and rewriting the whole program. I will insert an old screenshot below. It was about a month later I started a new job. I didn't have as much free time now.

This is extremely personal, but towards the end of December I went to the doctor who noticed/asked if I was extremely depressed. Being me, I didn't want to accept any help and insisted I was fine. He was not dumb and next thing I know, I'm in a 'Behavioral Health' program. Now, I find out I have Bipolar disorder.

Life goes on. I'm feeling more stable now. Then, my good ol' faithful Buick starts showing her age. I had plans to save enough to quit, I despised the place I worked at, but needed a new car. Oh boy, another year at that place. I didn't need anything expensive. Just something that runs good, isn't falling apart, and rusted. Almost impossible to find now where I live.

So, over the whole year of 2017, I was working sometimes 6 days a week for 8 - 10 hours a day. I was exhausted and extremely irritable, I absolutely hated the place. JKSM was basically the last thing on my mind.

I still checked in once or twice a week though. To this day, I'm still amazed that something I wrote was so widely used, and for a while, the go to for 3DS save management. I've come to realize that programming kept my mind occupied, and healthy.

Beginning this month I began looking at libnx and working on getting JKSM buildable without needing 10+ libraries. Though, I'll admit I became more interested in the Switch. It may sound ridiculous, but I haven't felt this good in a while. Something about it has changed my mood completely.

I've uploaded the source to the Switch version of JKSV here: https://github.com/J-D-K/JKSV. It was mostly to test some things and get familiar with the Switch and libnx, but I decided not to hoard it and share. It's not complete, but it does work.

Now for that long buried screenshot:

Very awesome. Glad that you are back and feeling better. Mental health is nothing to sneeze at...but you knew that.

Your JKSM continues to be awesome....

Serious question... is there something wrong with jksm? I never seemed to have trouble with it and while it's not as pretty as Checkpoint it seemed to work better for me.

Was there problems detecting extdata or something?

The only thing I would have wanted from the program was automatic backups before import/export I guess.

@TheWolfLord
Not really. It certainly still works. It was building it that became the problem. It relied on a lot of libraries, some of which were depreciated. Also, that was one of the planned future updates. The two I remember off the top of my head were auto-backup and a Goto button that jumped to a certain letter in the title menu.

Good to know you're back in the scene, @JK_. Before knowing about the Checkpoint homebrew, I had always used your app in backing up and restoring my saved files. It was very handy, especially for owners of multiple 3DSes like myself. Hoping to see the same app on the Switch soon!

Also, sorry to hear about your diagnosis!! That's certainly nothing to sniff at, bipolar depression killed my best friend :-( But it's also good getting diagnosed since you can start to treat it. I hope one day you find a job you like better - if you apply to a C programmer job there'll be thousands of happy JKSM users to give you a reference :-)

Thanks everyone. I'm currently getting JKSV Switch to a level I'm happy with before an actual release. It's currently what I'd consider usable, but there are a few things I still need to tweak in my opinion. I'm also not quite sure where to place the mass backup option...

Sorry about your bipolar disorder, I really hope you do get better. I'm glad you are back in the scene, at least you found something that relaxes you. I still use your save manager even tho there is many other save manager programs, I have Checkpoint installed but I still use this, your work has impacted me a lot. Hope you enjoy programming for the switch!

Thanks! I am enjoying it and pushing myself much further with it than I would normally. I think it's actually coming along pretty nice too, considering it just started as a practice project and was pretty much just a port until a week ago.

Edit : Also, if anyone is interested in testing, they can hit me up at anytime. I'm hitting the limits of what I can test myself.

Yes! This is great! JKSM is the best! I hate Checkpoint. TBH though I do prefer the current TUI to the new GUI you’re showing off though.

" I'm also not quite sure where to place the mass backup option"
If you could manage to get that working on the Switch version that would be great ^_^

It's actually faster with the icons. Since it can display 32 at a time without issue and I've added touch scrolling recently. Though, having a classic mode certainly wouldn't be impossible. It would just mean making it jump to a different state. That was originally how I wanted the 3DS update to work before I stopped working on it.

@Blue_Mew
It's already done. Pressing Y on the user select will dump everything it can get into for every user. Pressing Y after selecting a user will only dump the selected user's titles it can open.

@JK_ that’d be nice. Yeah, I just prefer the TUI because it’s simpler and reminds me less of Checkpoint

JKSM was extremely useful for when I transferred my data from Gateway to CFW.

In hindsight I should have just stuck with gateway even after installing A9LH... what a pain it was to lose my save data for a 4th time.

Wasn't using gateway with A9LH kinda risky? I remember there being some bricking issues with it.

@dimmidice only if you updated sysNAND while in Gateway mode. I tested updating in luma then booting Gateway mode with no ill effects except a black screen.
