Me and my friend are making a modified Windows XP!

Yes. We're using tools such as nLite and adding/removing programs on the disk. Most of the original backgrounds are .JP_ files, we've found all this stuff as we're moving along and it's been a really interesting thing to take a look at for me and him. Development originally only began with me in late May, now, you might expect it later this year.

Q/A

Q:What ware some good programs and tips?
A:I've been using nLite, and resource Hacker. They're free programs, but the nLite page doesn't work anymore. If you want you ask me for a link I have.
Q:How would I add my own backgrounds to the disk?
A:Make a folder in the $OEM$ folder called Web, inside that, another one called Wallpaper. Then add all the backgrounds you want!

Thanks for reading!

Changes:

Setup doesn't require a product key and is simplified to look like Windows 2000. It may even speed up the Install process quite a bit! If youryo doing an upgrade, setup will already provide you with one, since upgrades require one.
After install, a message on your screen will tell you it will be installing everything it needs to.

These are programs, such as 7-Zip, and many more, as well as new themes. I hope you like all the features coming soon in project M

the one feature that i find that would be interesting, would be to modify XP to accept and run on more than 4GB of ram. There are also starting to be some software that no longer supports XP such as K-Lite.

Im just really excited to see all this happening, is all. Plus we really wanted this. It's pretty neat imo.

@ferret7463 Since when does XP have a RAM limit of 4GBs? XP SP2 has limit at 128GBs and SP3 at 144GBs, the 4GB thing is a limitation of x86 Windows versions, regardless of what windows it is, NOT of XP (even win 7 x86 only uses 4GBs). If you use the x64 version you can use as much RAM as I mentioned.

On topic, what is even the point? If you are doing it in order to learn how it works in more detail and everything, then that's fine, but if you are modding it just because, you will probably end up with a more unstable version of it.

If you want to mod a version of Windows for a useful purpose, mod Win 7 and try to unlock the locked away modes of it, so we don't have to rely on shitty Virtual Windows (eg: XP Mode) to run 8bit and 16bit applications, such as some really awesome retro games (eg: Lucas Art's Outlaws, Batman Vengeance, etc.):P

There is an actual x64 version of xp ... except it has virtually no driver support which is why it went pretty much unused

Just forget about having windows XP address more than 4gb ram you'll just end up with it being unstable buggy mess.

Last time I had XP I was using a Pentium D build with 12GBs RAM (3 sticks of 4GBs at 800MHz) and literally never had such issues, all drivers worked perfectly fine and the very few I couldn't find as x64, I was able to get the x86 versions working with a little tweaking. It actually was the most stable build I ever had in my life, so don't know how you can say it's an unstable buggy mess...:/

i was actually talking about making a x86 based version of XP address more than 4 gb, its been done plenty of times before but you end up with a buggy unstable mess.

All i can say is you were very lucky with your hardware choices on that machine haha. Place where i worked at the time had a x64 version and i found it nothing but a nightmare especially with the person that used it changing components out pretty much constantly. everything from refusing to boot, to graphics corruption and audio issues Uhhh still can't look at a cream coloured pc case without shuddering.

Tho back in the day ( and still today ) windows Xp is a little workhorse of an OS, Still use it for some internal systems that dont require internet haha

I'm only really doing this for testing and learning. Thanks for asking btw. This test thing looks pretty good so far though.

What should I remove? Other than stuff such as the Windows XP tour and such
