The thought of spending even a half day learning about microsoft insecurity, much less their cloud stuff, from themselves makes me contemplate bad things.
If it is your old man's birthday and it will leave you with money issues to go then it seems the decision has been made for you.
This is not a big event, you seem like you would just have been attending and while might have been cool to have on a CV it is likely not going to teach you that much of great interest. Granted its popularity seems to have risen kind of out of nowhere (it is like the time you go to find out what TV show is the most popular and it is NCIS of all things) but I would probably still back a statement of "if you are learning of more than a timeline and execution quirks or less known APIs and something fairly fundamental you have gone wrong somewhere and probably need to hit the books/documentation".
