Portuguese Leftist used the Portuguese flag as table towel

There are many things wrong with my country's politics but one that rose up recently is that the Euro-Deputy Marisa Matias (from the Portuguese Left/Esquerda) was actually proud to share the image below...

I don't know what the fuck was wrong with her but this is completely insulting, disrespectful and offensive to the Portuguese flag and to the Portuguese people. The flag is part of our heritage, our nationality, part of what makes us Portuguese and it's our duty to cherish and respect it not treat it like some cheap shit that will go fine as a table towel.

COME ON!

This is on the same level as burning a flag (Antifas in US keep on burning USA flags even though they were born in America -- fucking morons).

Uh I haven't thought of it being insulting. I remember we once used a Canadian flag as a table towel because it was Canada's day. It was meant to be honourific or something, hahaha.

Culture is weird. Here in America, you can eat at a table made to look like a US flag, with a US flag table cloth, and eat with your US flag forks and spoon, wearing your US flag denim shirt, shoes, pants, underwear, glasses, and hats. If it's insulting to you, that sucks that person did that.

Same as vinscool. We often use disposable table towels with images of our flag printed on it just to celebrate or have a good time.

@VinsCool technically that's illegal. I'd have to look up the exact law, but both us and the states have some fairly specific laws about how the flag can and cannot be used.,

@Futurdreamz On military bases, maybe. Everywhere else in the States, it's firmly established law that the flag is just a flag, and any action towards the flag can be seen as a form of free expression. To consider mistreatment of a flag illegal is to ignore protected speech. You can use the flag however you like, and at worst it'll just be considered rude. Never illegal. Well, local laws maybe, but those are in violation of federal law, so any prosecutions of those laws would be thrown out (at least on appeal). That's what it's like in the States, at any rate. Supreme court ruled it was a matter of free speech, and they decided not to limit that speech. I'm not sure about Canada.

I know what you're referring to, Futurdreamz, but I'm not certain on how exactly it's meant to be interpreted. I mean, I know it's supposed to be illegal to use the American Flag as a piece of clothing, but does that include making clothing that looks like the flag rather than taking a flag and turning it into clothing? I think it also said something about not using it for advertisements, but that's certainly not being enforced (see: every Independence Day or President's Day ad ever).

I don't think it is disrespectful but I also don't know how nationalist people from Portugal are. I heard somewhere that Disney uses a modified US flag so they don't have to follow the procedures the flags should follow.

From what I gathered from the automatic translation of her accompanying post on facebook, that picture is from a group of portuguese people proudly celebrating their heritage while living in the Netherlands. In general it looks very neat, clean and tidy. Respectful. Much more respectful in fact than e.g draping one's sweaty, stinking body in your country's flag (not saying that is something to necessarily get your knickers in twist about either)

To me this is quite a spectacularly desperate attempt to smear a politician from your country's left block of politics.

I remember everyone here in the U.S. was freaking out because some officer took a picture of a baby carried within an American flag. I'm not one for symbolism, but in my opinion, I don't see anything wrong with that; if anything, it was symbolic of the baby being born an American citizen to a father in service or something.

This is just my opinion, though, but what I think would be a good idea for everyone is to stop taking everything so seriously and lighten up a bit. These people aren't actively out to get you; they made a stupid decision, at worst, but it was, more likely than not unintentional.

We've used a Brazillian flag on our table on September 7th ( independence day ) as comemoration.

Guess it changes from one country to the other eh.

That's hardly even insulting. You're overreacting.

@osaka35 I think the main difference between what you said about the 'merican style and using a flag as a table cloth is it is an actual flag. Actual flags are to be displayed proudly and above everyone as a sign of nationalism and patriotism. Eating off an "actual flag" to some people can seem disrespectful.
Wasn't there a tradition a long while ago where if an american flag hit the ground, it was to be burned or something because they are to be up high or something?
