Windows 7 to Arch: My Journey & Personal thoughts.

Hello, so you may have known that I have switched to Arch Linux, and as a (never using) distro hopper myself, I chose to stay in Arch Linux.

The Journey to Arch Linux

My interest in Arch Linux caused me to nuke my HDD, and start new in my new OS, and I do not regret that choice. It all started with my profile post (http://gbatemp.net/members/thekingy34.383904/?page=5#profile-post-58805) in which I have publicly said I am using Arch for the first time, this was just before me nuking my Windows partition and starting new. I regreted it at first, and wanted to go back.

I done some digging, and what interested me more is the customisable, well... Everything! It was looks-paradise to me, and I wanted to have a great performing, and great looking OS that I'd use on a daily basis, I started with XFCE then MATE (Same opinion, but Xfce slightly worse.). Loved every second of it, it looked great, it worked great, and it was great, and I have even taken screenshots of it. (http://i.imgur.com/Oq6IWXy.png) But I wanted more, I wanted to dig deep into the Linux mine of great looking and performing software, and see what I could get. I asked others of what DE they are using and why they use it.

Next up, LXDE. I did not like it, it didn't really work out as well as I thought, and wasn't as good as I hoped. I hated it, but now looking back at it, I could've gave it a fair chance and use it to my furthest abilities.

I started creating 'my own DE' by mixing panels and stuff to create a unique one, I kinda liked it. It was better than LXDE for me, but again, that one wasn't fair. However, I rebooted it. SO MUCH PROBLEMS! (which I was too lazy to fix)

At this point, I was out of ideas. I quit Arch Linux, and started going back to Windows. About a day-or-so later, I decided to fix my old Linux PC. Ding! Cinnamon, that's it! I am used to it, I know how to customise it, I-- well, it was perfect! I jumped back onto the Arch ship, and sailed ahead to get some of that fresh cinnamon. Here I am, it was Linux Mint all over again, but better. I installed my programs, and that's it. I did no change in looks until late yesterday.

Thoughts

I love Arch Linux. I love how free it is, and how perfect it is. It is lightweight, simple and elegant. If you require an image of it right now, here you go: (http://i.imgur.com/u9BlJrG.png).

I want to thank you for reading this, and you may suggest other DEs/distros for me to try. Goodbye, and I'll see you in the next post or blog or something, I guess.

@KevinX8 - There's a very common trend in that list: These are good games. Shit games often don't tend to get ported to Linux (not all, there is a good list of games that I would love to be on Linux, but both Mono and Wine exist for a reason).

Finally, if I'm being honest, I could give less of a shit on whether you run Windows or not. Just don't claim Windows is better than Linux. That is a factual lie.

First, that was just a quick google search to prove that there are indeed recent games coming out for Linux. Not even a detailed search, just a very basically search. This isn't even including source ports either.
Second, not everyone who uses Linux is interested in gaming. I am not a PC gamer, I play like 10 games on my PC and they work perfectly on Linux. The idea of harassing me with "no gaemz" has just become a childish taught. You aren't convincing me to leave Linux any time soon. I've been a proud Linux user for nearly 12 years now. I tested Windows on my boyfriend's laptop and I hated how Windows 10 felt. The new UI just feels like a Windows version of KDE5. Actually Windows 10 as whole just feels like more akin to a Zorin OS style distro to me.
But unlike Linux, I still can't modify the source code. Limiting me to the closed off walls that Microsoft wants me to play in. I can't deal with something like that when coming from an OS that I can literally change my entire core.

@Crystal the Glaceon I'm not trying to convince you to switch, I'm just stating the fact LINUX IS SHIT FOR GAMING but you keep saying "no it good stap" like look at a comparison of one of the games on the recently released list, it should say enough for you:

I never said every game was perfect, in fact I even said, "In some cases it is. Minecraft runs a lot smoother on Linux and so do most of my Steam games."
Let me break it down more
"In some cases it is."
Not every case is the same. But once again, what are you here to prove? Like I stated before, Windows has already won. Linux is never going to push Windows down. Linux even had the endorsement of PC Gaming God, Gabe Newell and still has't beaten Windows. You really don't have anything to prove
Linux is 2% of the actual desktop market

You should be happy that the OP isn't using Windows 7 anymore because apparently Windows 7 is completely trashing Windows 10.
But like I said before, why do you feel the need to be so defensive? I didn't disagree with you at all. But even then, that doesn't mean you are right to trash on Linux. Not everyone wants to use Windows and they are free to do that. Not everyone is a PC gamer and or don't care about PC Gaming. What OS a person is using has no effect on you nor even Window's market share. You don't have to defend Windows, it's already won.

@EthanAddict @Crystal the Glaceon You guys say that as if I haven't run benchmarks on my games. Wine's emulation is incredibly poor. I get 60FPS on GTA 5 consistently running Windows, whilst on Arch Linux I got 45 frames average. Are you telling me I should consider this playable?

I have a thousand games in my Steam Library. I know which ones run on Steam for Linux. However, the games I enjoy playing are not optimized for Linux.

I am very strict on the FPS I get in games. Linux does not do that well with the games I play.

Ah, if only more manufacturers cared about making open source drivers (even for windows+mac only, plenty of porting volunteers anyway)

tl;dr - fuck Brother and Broadcom

@Xanthe You have very strict rules considering how many FPS a game should have to be considered playable, mine is just 30 FPS to be eh-meh smooth. Also Linux is better optimised for lower-end machines like mine, and from my experience games run better on Wine than Windows...

@EthanAddict My rules are strict because I bought a $700 PC designed for gaming. Why would I purchase a computer of such a high price only to get 45 FPS average when it can be much higher when simply running a different operating system? High end games, especially directx games, will not be played better on Linux. Period.

@EthanAddict Your previous comment was hard to comprehend, so I'll try and answer the way I believe you intended the question to sound

OpenGL still runs better on a Windows computer, however, this can vary based on the computer.

"also the machine I own is low-end, and I didn't buy it at all..."
I don't know how to respond to this?

Did you not read any of my posts? I can break them down
Not a pc gamer, don't care about pc gaming.
I don't use Linux gaming and I won't use Windows for gaming because I am not a PC gamer

Did you not read any of my posts? Let me break them down for you as well.
I am a PC gamer.
Windows is better than Linux for Gaming.
I wasn't talking about the use of Arch Linux on a low end computer.
I don't care about your computer.
My opinion has been stated about Arch.

Let me direct you to my first comment on this blog:
"Would love to make the transition, however, I own a gaming PC. My gaming PC is designed to have great performance with video games. In my experience with linux and video games...well..."

In case you still do not understand, I said I do not use Arch for Gaming because the performance is awful. Did I say I cared about your PC? No, in fact, I never mentioned your PC.

"That feel when wine, PlayonLinux, and more Steam. The whole "Linux = No games" is dying more and more everyday."
^A quote from you

You tried to challenge my post. If you do not care about PC gaming, then I would invite you to stray away from the topic of gaming on Linux.

Expect I am replying to your first post regarding Wine. You may have a strict stance on FPS and PC gaming, but I don't. You were the one who tagged me and brought it up

Only tagged you once you challenged my post saying Linux is not meant for gaming. I never tagged you first. Did you just stop reading halfway through my last comment? I feel as if I am repeating myself.

You didn't have to bring yourself into this conversation, so do not pin that on me.

You are taking a tongue-in-cheek comment rather overboard. Of course I know Wine/PlayonLinux aren't perfect for gaming, but that doesn't mean they don't work. Obviously they are no substitute, despite their overall improvements. Seriously, I remember wine when it used to work like 2 of my games and they ran like shit took a dump. Now it runs all of the PC games I play just fine and I am ok with that because the game I play are super old and already had a 30FPS to begin with.
Regardless, that comment was suppose to be a tongue-in-cheek comment regarding the old comment "Linux has no gaemz." It has them, no one said they were perfect.

@Crystal the Glaceon
Hmm, looking back at the comments, I don't recall every implying Linux has no games. Interesting.

Because I seem to repeat myself quite a bit, I might as well do it some more:
"Wine's emulation is incredibly poor. I get 60FPS on GTA 5 consistently running Windows, whilst on Arch Linux I got 45 frames average. Are you telling me I should consider this playable?"

I'm not saying Linux has no games, I'm saying it can't run my games. Major difference, eh?
