Windows 7 to Arch: My Journey & Personal thoughts.

Hello, so you may have known that I have switched to Arch Linux, and as a (never using) distro hopper myself, I chose to stay in Arch Linux.

The Journey to Arch Linux

My interest in Arch Linux caused me to nuke my HDD, and start new in my new OS, and I do not regret that choice. It all started with my profile post (http://gbatemp.net/members/thekingy34.383904/?page=5#profile-post-58805) in which I have publicly said I am using Arch for the first time, this was just before me nuking my Windows partition and starting new. I regreted it at first, and wanted to go back.

I done some digging, and what interested me more is the customisable, well... Everything! It was looks-paradise to me, and I wanted to have a great performing, and great looking OS that I'd use on a daily basis, I started with XFCE then MATE (Same opinion, but Xfce slightly worse.). Loved every second of it, it looked great, it worked great, and it was great, and I have even taken screenshots of it. (http://i.imgur.com/Oq6IWXy.png) But I wanted more, I wanted to dig deep into the Linux mine of great looking and performing software, and see what I could get. I asked others of what DE they are using and why they use it.

Next up, LXDE. I did not like it, it didn't really work out as well as I thought, and wasn't as good as I hoped. I hated it, but now looking back at it, I could've gave it a fair chance and use it to my furthest abilities.

I started creating 'my own DE' by mixing panels and stuff to create a unique one, I kinda liked it. It was better than LXDE for me, but again, that one wasn't fair. However, I rebooted it. SO MUCH PROBLEMS! (which I was too lazy to fix)

At this point, I was out of ideas. I quit Arch Linux, and started going back to Windows. About a day-or-so later, I decided to fix my old Linux PC. Ding! Cinnamon, that's it! I am used to it, I know how to customise it, I-- well, it was perfect! I jumped back onto the Arch ship, and sailed ahead to get some of that fresh cinnamon. Here I am, it was Linux Mint all over again, but better. I installed my programs, and that's it. I did no change in looks until late yesterday.

Thoughts

I love Arch Linux. I love how free it is, and how perfect it is. It is lightweight, simple and elegant. If you require an image of it right now, here you go: (http://i.imgur.com/u9BlJrG.png).

I want to thank you for reading this, and you may suggest other DEs/distros for me to try. Goodbye, and I'll see you in the next post or blog or something, I guess.

@Crystal the Glaceon lol you are seriously telling me wine has the same compatibility and performance as Windows when it comes to gaming? Don't make me laugh. It's just a low level emulator, rather than translating cpu byte code it translates Windows API calls to POSIX which is still emulation albeit much better than byte code. If I wanted to run my games at 50% of their potential performance I would just get a console pfft

It's too bad we aren't in 2005 anymore. Wine's gotten a hell of a lot better. But considering the raising number of games on Linux, Wine won't even be needed. Most games coming out these days have been launched with a Linux port and or end up with a Linux port.
Your comments on Linux are out of date as your OS

KevinX8 But all that aside, why are you so defensive of Windows?
It's not like Linux actually poses a threat to Windows. You can't buy laptops from stores with Linux on it, most games only end up with a Linux port later on, official driver support for most GPUs is hit n' miss. It's obvious that Linux isn't a threat and there's no reason to be so defensive of it.

@Crystal the Glaceon am I missing something here? Is this a war or something I'm meant to be fighting? You made the claim Linux has the same compatibility and performance as Windows when it comes to games which is absolute crap, if you look at any Linux port of a game you get at most 50% the performance you would on the windows version and compatibility with gpu drivers is just no on Linux. Also almost every manufacturer offers you to get the laptop cheaper if you buy it with Linux but since most people don't want Linux and aren't pirates they just choose windows.

@KevinX8 You're coming across as being overtly hostile and defensive of Windows and seem adamant on calling Linux shit.

Also, I'm very much inclined to disagree with you. Starbound and FTL run better on my current laptop under Linux than under Windows. In fact, these games don't even run on Windows with my shitty laptop, but run on above average preformance on Linux. Linux ports are very much good in performance. Also, compatibility with GPU drivers on Linux is alright. Hell, even most manufacturers of GPU cards offer drivers for Linux.

@Ev1l0rd sorry but are you seriously using a potato to gauge the gaming performance for Linux overall? Do you want me to give you just some of my own benchmarks?

I am not at war with you. I have no reason to war with you. My post was mostly tongue-in-cheek, but you are taking it rather seriously. My actual post was the one that followed. You seem really upset over this, like someone came into your house and forced you install Linux or something. No one cares what OS you are running and really you shouldn't care either. If the OP is happy with Arch over Windows 7, then that only effects them.

@Crystal the Glaceon I just wanted to point out your outrageous claims that linux was actually better for gamers and that it performed better in games...

@KevinX8 Linux as an OS is lighter and uses less resources. Where Window would lag all the time, certain distros can make a PC like new and use less than 1/3 if the resources, so it is actually faster when using it...

Well I've already been convinced to switch to Arch ever since I switched from Windows 10 to Mint and shortly learned about Arch afterwards (hooray me and my outdated software). The thing I love about Mint is that it came with cinnamon, and that's about it really. When I get my new PC later this month I'll be joining the Arch master race. B-)

@Crystal the Glaceon obviously minecraft runs better, it's almost completely cpu dependant, it's optimisation is crap. Also sorry but I don't want to be stuck with 5 year old games and a few indie titles to play, thanks but no thanks.
@EthanAddict windows uses about 3% of my resources... so a third of that would be 1%, wew so much more potential...

Oh and also speaking of Wine, I've been able to set up the perfect prefix for me by making it 32-bit and installing all .NET frameworks using Winetricks and then installing K-Lite. Vegas 13 and CS6 work just as well as they would on Windows. All the games I actually play are old as shit and don't run on Windows 7 or higher and run perfectly on Wine, usually without any adjustments or installing more stuff beforehand to get the games running.

@KevinX8 It is even funnier when a usual Windows peasant can't even read a comment properly, I said "where Windows Lags" peasant...

@EthanAddict you aren't meant to game on a potatoe dude...
@Crystal the Glaceon the amount of games on that list from the past 5 years is the amount of games windows get's in one month....
