Resident Evil 6

Just played the demo.

So the game is divided into three different storylines. One for Leon (and his sidekick um... Helen?), one for Chris (and his sidekick Piers), and one for a new character called Jake (and his sidekick Sherry). I beat Leon's and Chris's but Jake's was a pain in the ass so I haven't beaten it yet.

If the demo is anything to go by, the game is sorta divided among horror segments for Leon and action segments for Chris, which feels very fitting. The Leon demo was legitimately scary, very well done. If you thought Resident Evil lost its horror, then this should convince you otherwise. Plus the game feels more actiony for Chris so if you enjoyed playing a more action type game like Resident Evil 5, that's there. Jake seemed more co-op focused and it gave me nightmares reminders of playing Resident Evil 5.

They're also a bit aesthetically different. Leon was fighting zombies, like straight up zombies. Chris was fighting bioweapons, like guys with guns but they would mutate after you damaged them (like some would grow a giant arm, others would sprout wings and crap). Jake was fighting a Nemesis-type creature along with some regular guys with guns.

Gameplay seems fine and there's a lot of details to it but it looks like it'll take a while to get used to. There's a lot of things you can do, from your normal aim-and-shoot to diving and aiming on the ground, rolling and moving on the ground, melee attacks, finishers, etc etc. Each character is unique to an extent, from their combat styles to even their HUDs. But it controlled fine, it just feels like it'll need a full game to get used to everything.

But yeah, some brief plot synopsis from the demo. Leon is some sort of secret service agent. The president gets infected by the virus and you shoot him. He joins up with another agent, Helen, to escape from their location. For Chris, after the events of RE5, he continues working for BSAA and ends up losing a lot of men. He then becomes a drunk or something and Piers, a BSAA agent, brings him back into the force, all cleaned up. You're with Piers in China as you go to save the UN from bioterrorists. Jake, I dunno, he's getting chased by a Nemesis type thing. Didn't finish that demo.

Overall I was very pleased with the demo. I'd put my skepticism aside if you were one of the "RESIDENT EVIL IS DEAD THIS IS JUST GEARS OF WAR" types because it still feels entirely Resident Evil. It kinda represents the past, present, and future of the series.

Uh, for a person who is very easily scared, even when playing stuff like Alan Wake, would you recommend the Resident Evil series? To be specific, 4, 5 and 6?
I am kinda interested in the story, and also trying to be fully open to the horror genre, so yeah >>;

Well, it depends on what scares you. If you're a "jump scare" type of person, Resident Evil generally isn't bad with that. If you're a monsters-scare-me type of person, Resident Evil will probably get you a bit.

RE4 isn't exactly pants-shitting scary, it's more tension scary. Like running away from hordes and facing them down while your ammo slowly drains. RE5, well, it's not scary, it's actually just kinda dumb.

But I'm not the best person to ask, I never played the first three games nor do I have much interest in them.

I'd suggest trying Resident Evil 4. It's like less than $10 for PS2 or Gamecube or you can spend $20 on the HD version for PS3/Xbox 360. It's a great game and it's good to gauge how much it'll "scare" you. Some things scared me a bit, not to make me scream but maybe make my hair stand up and have me jump in my seat a bit, but nothing nightmare-inducing.

From what you describe, it sounds like I might be able to play through the games after all.
Thanks! Gonna go get 4 first and see if I can handle em >3>

Dont worry, people will still bitch because apparently only games with shitty controls and pixlated zombies can be good.

I do have a feeling a lot of people were hating on the initial impressions because it had chest-high walls. Nowadays anything that dares to use a cover system that doesn't start with a "V" and end with an "anquish" will get bashed for "OMG IT'S JUST GEARS OF WAR".

I barely even used the cover system here. Most of the combat is actually mid to close range.

A lot of people seem to be mad that you need the org Dragon's Dogma disc to even get the demo.

Even though it stated on the paper with the code that you needed it lol.

I mean if the cost of playing the demo is getting a rather great game then I guess that's a price worth paying.

Odds are another or the same demo will become available eventually, that's usually how it works.
