JRPG Contradiction

I love JRPGs, but I hate JRPGs. You can barely find more compelling story (and in Final Fantasy, music) in JRPGs, but I just hate the gameplay. It's mind blowing, really. @_@ I want to play them, but I can't. Is there a solution, doctor?!

JRPGs often have terrible stories that are needlessly complex and confusing and the gameplay, well if you're into that sort of thing, is usually good.

I know that both JRPGs and WRPGs often suffer the same cliches but it's often a lot worse for JRPGs. As Hideo Kojima said, "Japan's curse is its focus on Japan."

JRPGs have shit stories. I can never understand how any of these stories are even regarded as vaguely decent. They're cliche, full of plot holes and convoluted.

Guild prefers stories that involve a badass killing shit for justice. That being the entire basis of the story.

I can never tell if you're trolling or serious, but i'll point out Valkyria Chronicles and Nier, and leave it at that to destroy the whole "shit story" argument. I'd love to see a western game be even half as compelling as either of those two.

I think I'd prefer badasses killing people than looking up skirt at kawaii anime girls.

I played Nier and it was good because it abandoned a lot of the cliches of JRPGs, it was a JRPG made to appeal to a western audience after all. Even then, two games out of a gigantic market of JRPGs is a horrible track record.

Check out tales games. amazing stories and character development

Stories? Nahh...
Character development? Sometimes

The characters' themselves are good though they usually are clichés.
The gameplay and battle system though...

Think of JRPG as a type of game not a regional thing. You can still very much find the kind of stories you like in WRPGs, I suggest picking up a combo of something like dragon age, and Final fantasy 12 you'll get to see the core mechanics of a WRPG and how the combat differs from JRPGs.

Because Valkryia chronicles totally didn't have a baby being born in an extreme hot tank right after a battle which the mother sat through >_> no sir that isn't convoluted at all. Its almost like they didn't bother researching such things as how tanks are on the inside to the point where you need to make huge leaps in logic if you do know how they are on the inside. An surely said tank just laying around isn't some kind of plot point that can be easily explained by "oh my dad had it" which some how shoots the main character up into something with a high rank >_> that'd be silly

As for compelling? Bastion, to the moon, dragon age, list goes on. You haven't really looked have you?

A majority do and it is hard to find something truly amazing. Almost everything now uses some cliche so that part is a tad unfair. Now how it is used, that is where JRPGs have a short coming in that they will almost always. ALWAYS. Use it in the same way you've seen a billion times before.

Shin Megami Tensei and Type Moon stuff anyone?
...anyone?
welp idc anyways since I manage to completely enjoy games from both sides~ Dragon Age and Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne <3 for example, or Bastion and Z.H.P~

I found Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor a terribly slow and hard game. Part of the reason why I can't stand JRPG games.

SMT in general is a tough series. However, have you tried the Persona series? It tends to be easier than the mainline SMT series. I would recommend Persona 3 and 4, due to gameplay refinements over the first two Persona games.
SMT is the series that has given me a taste for tougher games >3> Even though I generally suck at the series haha, the end result generally feels highly rewarding to me.

I'm so bad at it, I quit on Day Two. XD And they said at Day 3 it would be hard.
