Thinking about it, there's probably more crappy video games out there compared to good video games released in a given year. So generalizing in total, video games are crap for the most part ;O;
(But yes, video games are quite awesome, I don't think anyone here would disagree lol)
Something I realized recently was that most of the games I see coming out nowadays have either great graphics and mediocre gameplay or the reverse. It seems like it's getting harder to find a happy middle ground.
That being said, I do believe games are awesome in general. I love the idea that I can take a game from my childhood and still enjoy it long after I've grown old. I can't think of a single type of activity that people can enjoy thirty or more years after the fact as much as they did as a child. That is a powerful thing.
Some video games are awesome, however when you have grown up playing games and are now in your 20's or 30's, you do start to realise a lot of games released today are simply cash cows.
That doesn't seem to matter though, theirs enough people out there who haven't played variations of the same game over and over again for the last 10+ years so will still buy the newer games.
That said some games today do still innovate, take Pokemon Go for example. A totally different take on a traditional franchise that really has got so many people interacting with other like minded people locally, making use of real world locations in a game. I never expected to still be playing Pokemon Go a year and a half later, however I do think that's proof its possible to create a totally unique gaming experience today.
