Not necessarily. Any kind of engine can be used, but I'm thinking steam engines are probably easiest.
Or just building a water turbine and putting it in a river.
Wind turbines are a little more complicated, you've seen how tall they are. Water turbines can be pretty small.

I'd really like to see you build a turbine all by yourself without having ready components in the past...when such things didn't exist for example.
