Just downloading the Game without the Extras?

I've noticed if I download Dungeons and Dragons or Lord of the Rings or other online desktop top of games they downloaded other players or software in order to use them. Is there a way to download games without the extra add-on's? I just don't want my laptop taking up too much space with extra stuff that is needed.

Short answers: depends on the game, and depends on the source. Many games require extra applications running as part of their DRM (e.g. Games that required star dock like Demigod or Steam like Portal). Also, many cracked/pirated software remove the need for these extra apps and just run directly.

Going legit, deal with the extras.
Going pirate, well... You'll need to find your own sources for that.
EDIT: DRM free alternative, look into the humble bundle store.

usually you can't do pretty much... if you are talking about the adware (toolbars and browsers) usually you are given the option during install to not install them...
