    This maybe silly but do you have the drive in the right port? On the wii its the bottom port (the one closest to the edge, Wii u its the back top port. Are you using a flash drive? If so thats most likely the problem. If using a harddrive do you have external power? Either plugged into the wall...

    Savegame manager gx should do the trick for you. You will have to install this on the older wii and the vwii. Then just run the program on the old wii to export the save files to the SD card and import them to the vwii via the SD card. http://wiibrew.org/wiki/SaveGame_Manager_GX

    Do not use a usb stick. These can cause unforeseen and random issues. They are not recommended ever. Use a hard drive and be done with it.

    You should just try it and rule that out. I know gamestop has small sd cards (like 2gb & 4gb) for a very little amount of money.
