I've been using Tinleaf, which too has not been updated since 2021, for years. It, too, does exhibit an issue installing an update or DLC from time to time. But the app will inform you about it since an error will pop out indicating the issue. I'd rather prefer that than believe that an update...
Not the games as a whole per se, but I think the combat presentation in every Earthbound/Mother game has not aged well. I remember that, while I was enjoying the adventure in each title, I wished they all had better combat visuals, especially when using ESP skills.
I originally saw this topic on Reddit a few days ago, and some are saying that it's fake. The main takeaway of the fakeness, among other things, is the HD remaster of Animal Crossing, which they say has never happened in the franchise.

I was already using the latest version of Hekate and Atmosphere and the hashes of the FW 17.0.0 were okay.
But since you mentioned about an overlay, I recall installing Tesla as an attempt to use emuiibo before. I think that might be the culprit.

It's the Tesla overlay that was indeed...
