Before flashing always backup the data first. In addition you can upgrade and even downgrade. Please don't update early gems. 1.x as these are rare.

As the WiiU has two systems included within it's structure, the focus of system emulation should not be contained to only half the hardware.
Yes, but having the ability to emulate NGC (Through vWii/devolution), WII, and WII U using the same emulator would be an idea for consideration. Unless Dolphin team is working on integrating support for Wii U emulation.
I don't think soldering will be an issue, I imagine the plastic has broken or has become jammed.
