If you're only playing at 1080p the 1080 is probably the better buy. Not sure about VR though.

GPUs should be replaced every few years anyway. Better to save that money for an upgrade later.

They should only be replaced if you need bleeding edge tech.. Most high end builds can go 4-5 years without needing to change out the gpu.

And the same is true for the 1080, more or less.
The 1080 Ti won't last long enough to make up for the price difference, especially since better GPUs are coming out for less money all the time.

By that logic you should just go cheap all the time and upgrade yearly. It's all preference. Get what you think will work best for you.

I see no reason to not go 1080ti aside from saving some money. It won't last nearly as long. Guaranteed.

I usually go for the mid range option (currently on a 970) and upgrade when I feel it's necessary. Has worked out well for me so far. Of course it depends on his needs. If he plays a lot of AAA games and wants the best graphics possible all the time a 1080 Ti might make more sense. But for 1080p it's honestly overkill IMO.
