I'd personally recommend Linux Mint 18.1.

If you have never used Linux before, I suggest Zorin OS or Linux Mint. If you want something easy, but really being more true to Linux, that I suggest Ubuntu MATE.

@Crystal the Glaceon Zorin OS I understand, but how is Linux Mint being "less true to Linux" than Ubuntu? Besides, MATE is one of the two primarily supported desktop environments for Linux Mint, while Ubuntu MATE is just a community fork of Ubuntu.

Linux Mint is designed out of the box being more closely resembling Windows' layout. Where Ubuntu MATE is made to be more Unix-like. Sure you can get Mint setup like that, but I always suggest Ubuntu MATE first to get that experience out of the box.

Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop is what I personally use.

When you get used to using Mint, you should consider switching to Arch/Antergos/Manjaro sometime then you'll never be stuck with old versions of software again.

Get Gentoo, if you want the true Linux experience.
Other then that, Puppy is nice.

There is no "true" Linux experience; Linux by itself is just a kernel.
