The only existing flag only changes the A/B/Y/X mappings. After looking over the readme again, it unfortunately seems to confirm that the L1 button only works on Classic and Pro controllers (although I don't know why) so I'm guessing the only thing there is left to do is either wait for a fix or try to find and buy the fixed version of the game that doesn't have that problem (player's choice perhaps? Can't remember)

@K3Nv2 He was looking into consoles for his house anyway (for my younger siblings and himself) and I had a spare XSX and Switch I ended up selling him at pretty steep cuts. I would just give them to him, but I did buy them with the intent to sell them... and college is super expensive. -
