What bad things have you heard, and what do you intend to do with it?
I impulse bought one on the release day and while OS support was limited to start with, it now does everything i wanted.

Well, I heard the thing has problems with heat... But I mean, I can deal with that. I also heard some things about them just breaking. Although I don't trust those statements. I plan on using it for Python, maybe some C. Really, it's to use for my controller I'm building.

I am quite interested in circuits. Being an aspiring electrician, too.

If the thing you want will work within the limit of a Pi 3 then there wouldn't be much point.
I can't comment too much on them breaking but the heat I can, it does get quite hot under even average load but there are official heatsinks and fans that you can use if its an issue.

Though I don't really know much about circuits/electrics, I just use mine as a small linux server that I can dump somewhere and run local stuff on.

Yeah, I had a feeling it wouldn't be really worth it. The heat issue wouldn't bother me, and I can deal with that. As I have done it with the B3 models. Also, if you don't mind me asking. You said the OS was better now? I've read some things about it not being fully supported. STILL.

The only bad thing I heard about them is the micro HDMI ports

What do you mean? I mean the choices outside of Raspbian are greater now. For example I exclusively run Debian64Pi: https://github.com/ChasTechProjects/Debian64Pi
And stuff like Ubuntu, Lakka and recently RetroPie are all here now. On launch you were stuck with Raspbian so its good to have some choice.
That said, Raspbian is probably enough for most people. It just wasn't for me.
S

FUCK. I completely forgot about those... Y'know. That might be the deciding factor lmfao.

And yeah micro HDMI is a really bad standard, if you need a constant and movement-tolerant connection then you won't be getting that at all.

I'm pretty sure arch linux arm supports the pi 4 too but I don't know if the compatibility on that is good with any pi model
S
slimbizzy
Ah, well glad to hear retroPi is available. As, my controller was going to be for that after all. I'm really stuck on the HDMI port though. Like, I'm not afraid to use an adapter. But it just makes it so much less convenient.

Yeah and I only heard bad things about the durability of those tiny connectors
S

I wonder, if there are any hard mods or something. I am also getting my hands on a 3D printer soon, so I guess if I just build an adapter inside the case it would be as durable as I could make it. Still, a T shaped case is not ideal...

If you're just making a controller for RetroPie and want to test it then I don't see why you would need the extra power of the Pi 4 unless you wanted to emulate some of the later consoles.
S
slimbizzy
Yeah, I've been thinking about that. I would enjoy being able to play a wider range of consoles. The controller is also more of a project to get me into code, now I know it might be a large jump, but it is the only thing that has REALLY motivated me into learning more.

Go for it :)
One of the best ways to learn these things is to find a project that interests and excites you and learn as you go - pushing through until you reach your goal.
