I once played NiGHTS into Dreams for 2-1/2 minutes in a store when I was a kid, back when they had full games in consoles in stores, but had them set to restart after a couple minutes. Played it, thought it was the most awesomeness thing I ever saw, but I was SNES household so I couldn't play it.

Fast forward ~15 years, I see it on sale in a Himble Bundle. I buy it, giddy with excitement, only to realize after the sale clears and I redeem my code that it won't run on my potato. Fast forward another 3 years or so, I finally plunk down on a new gaming laptop, fill my Steam library, and download NiGHTS along with several titles from Bundles I couldn't play before.

Basically, the game was only fun for the first 2 minutes, then it just felt boring and repetitive. At least it didn't cost me much to be that disappointed.

Skyrim. I was so hyped for that game - I have tried to play it so many times - it's garbo.

I try not to hype myself up when buying games because it always leads to disappointment.

That said I remember Halo 2 being my biggest disappointment of all time. Me and my brother both ended up getting an Xbox and for a while we both knew what we were getting. He wanted Fable and I wanted Halo 2 because it looked purty. Well needless to say Halo 2 ended up being shit and Fable was a far better game. I ended up giving Halo 2 to my brother after awhile as he liked it more than me. Since then I've played the original Halo which ended up being the better game overall. It still didn't compare to Perfect Dark on the N64 though.

Mega man 9. No seriously while is not bad game is very hard compared to mega man 2, and the use of the classic nes looking style left a huge question mark on my face.

Let's see.
  • Can't slide
  • No charge slot
  • Proto man dlc
  • Harder difficulty modes. (I mean harder than a standard normal mode, even though normal is hard)
  • Achievement system is god awful requirements. (Bet no one has save data of a full achievement completed)
  • No rush marine despite having a water level... (Splash woman)
  • No impressive graphics (NOT EVEN WIDE SCREEN ON A CUTTING EDGE CONSOLE)
  • Crazy plot. (While usually mega man games have the same kind of plot, having wily frame dr. light was just a bit silly, worst than 10)
I'm sure there is more but i did expect a better looking game to be honest, not nes graphics. It even has a "Legacy mode" To adjust screen flicker. :wtf:

After making a better looking game like mega man 7, mega man 8 or Mega man and Bass (Which has mega man 8 graphics) WHY ON EARTH POSSESSED THEM TO DO THIS! The statement that "We made this game based on mega man 2" Was bad, Mega man 3 is best mega man. :creep:

Still why they did that i dunno and then did it again in the sequel mega man 10. THE SAME KIND OF GAME! Look i'm not a huge graphic nut like some people out there, but it could have done a bit more than just make nes game on modern hardware. Whatever capcom was thinking should have the person responsible fired for this decision. O_O

To be honest the game isn't bad, is a mega man game, that is it. But i expected more from what was the 8th game in the series, and get more from the next, it seem like a downgrade. If they wanted do something good, they should have done something like this! :)

Fire Emblem Fates. As soon as the first japanese trailer came out, I had been so psyched for its western release, yet, I found it to be terrible when it finally got localized.

In terms of waiting a really long time and being disappointed, I'd heard about Dark Cloud for nearly a decade, finally bought it on PS4, and detested it. Mechanics are too dated/gameplay is not very interesting. Was kinda a bummer.

I didn't wait for a long time fortunately, but several months at least. Back in the PS2 era I fell in love with the trailers and info about Unlimited SaGa before it was released. When it finally was released, I took my hard earned money and bought it in a store (= extra expensive).

I tried and tried and tried to like it, but it's so very difficult and time consuming. I expected to be able to grind for levels, but no... this is all about hardcore strategy and luck. I would loooove to watch a let's play of it by a skilled player. I like almost everything about it, except the level of fun I have when playing it.

There was a time during PS1/PS2 that Konami could do no wrong. I can't really think of a bad game they made around that era. (except for the one I'm about to mention) So I was pumped up for Nanobreaker on PS2.

What a smoking turd that turned out to be.

C&C: tiberian sun.

I absolutely loved the original Command & conquer (I think I played through both campaigns 2 or 3 times). Red alert clearly improved on the formula, but I missed things like the flame tank, the obelisk of light and that ion storm the GDI had. Basically, I wanted tiberian sun (which was teased at the end of C&C*) to be a mix of both.

It was anything but that. The perspective was altered a bit, meaning there was less on screen (and less visible, but that could be due to the theming as well). I hated that base updating mechanic. There were no naval units. The B-actors in the cutscenes addressed someone else rather than you (who the hell thought THAT was a good idea?!). And most of all: some units were plain broken. Sure, the mammoth tank was always strong...but the bottom of this game was when I cleared the entire last level with just a mammoth tank and a repair vehicle I had from taking over an enemy vehicle building plant. This game had the doubtful honor of being the first game I ever returned to the store. I got less than half of my money back, but even that didn't concern me.

...but my first thought was UT3. The creators did some serious damage control after release, but before the black edition it was one horrible mess. The UI was a disaster (menu's had barely any items and required confirming so often that simply starting a game became a chore). It had barely any levels. The vehicle combat was plain not fun. And while epic wasn't known for their great level design, there were hardly any levels at launch either. More so: the iconic wildly different styles were gone too (there were about 4 different themes in the entire game, starring all a sort of black or grey). And for some reason, someone thought it was a good idea to remove the tournament from the story (mind you: "UT" stands for Unreal Tournament) in favor of a vendetta "story" that would even make the lousiest fanfic writer blush in shame.
People movement was a different thing. Granted: I had played UT2004 for years, and everyone agreed that the movement system (with all the dodgejumping antics) had too much of a learning curve to be enjoyable by new players. Epic listened a bit TOO much: Aside from a straight dodge you could do nothing, which meant that hardcore players always felt like they were moving through mud.

Oh, and probably the worst of all: finding people online was close to impossible. In UT2004, you could add favorite servers and search for players based on wildcards (eg: clan tags). At launch, you couldn't do either in UT3, thus forcing hardcore FPS players together with newbies, which ruined the fun for everyone.

Granted: on hindsight the game wasn't as bad rather than it suffering from overhyped expectations (and while my personal favorite gametype - bombing run - wasn't there, it had the best CTF maps and mechanics ever. Unfortunately, the only crowded servers I ever found were filled with snipers on CTF-Face...and that got boring after the zillion'th match).

*and with that probably had around 5 years head start on what's currently known as a 'teaser'.
