Nintendo takes down Gmod content from Steam's Workshop

header.jpg

Nintendo might just as well be a law firm more than a videogame company at this point in time, since they have yet again issued their now almost trademarked usual DMCA strike, this time against mods in the Steam Workshop for on the most popular Half Life 2 mod, Garry's mod (or Gmod as it's usually referred to).

The news broke out yesterday, on April 24th, as Garry Newman announced that he would be taking down all Nintendo-related items gathered and made throughout almost 20 years since the inception of Garry's Mod back in the mid 2000s from the Workshop due to a DMCA by Nintendo.
This caused speculation online, as it has been known that often some people completely unrelated to Nintendo send false DMCA strikes for projects that might contain Nintendo assets of any kind (with some of those falsely made strikes sent by a person named Aaron Peters), and Newman was made known about it, with a research about the source of the sent-DMCA strike begun shortly after.

However, in a recently made post by Newman himself, he stated that "the takedowns have been verified by Nintendo as legit", so the removal of Nintendo's items from the Workshop will continue as announced in his post from April 24th.

This is yet another instance of a fan project being taken down by Nintendo, and it's unlikely this is gonna end anytime soon given their increasingly aggressive abuse of the DMCA for anything fan-related.

Apparently it was, that's why I held off on posting about it until confirmation about the strike being real was made, and Newman just confirmed it.

Thank goodness Newman confirmed everything that it was indeed a real takedown. I seriously loathe the direction of Nintendo. Makes me wonder why people still support them just as much as Apple to this day.

Indeed, I have given up on everything Nintendo and even sold a couple consoles I had from them already, I don't want anything to do with their stuff from now on until they change this tyrannical stance on fan-made content. They abuse the DMCA as if Fair Use and Personal Use don't exist, and they know this, yet they still force people to do so regardless due to legal fear.

Until Nintendo offers a clear-cut ROM/ISO store, where you buy the game once in its ROM/ISO format and own it forever, I won't be giving them any more money.

At least you're pirating out of spite? Or you're actually not playing Nintendo games to that extent anymore? As you can tlel from my pfp, Nintendo did have a huge influence on my life (bigger than Terrarria) and I CANNOT get rid of it. Their games are good, but I just pirate them due to convenience.

I already have my entire library of retro games backed up, I do play on emulators, and I will only play their shit on emulators from now on, they can take their hardware and shove it.

Good thing that you still play the games, at least. I was about to say. I almost think that it's impossible for someone to not like Nintendo to buy their products but to avoid not playing their games, either unless other companies genuielly have more interest than Nintendo games overall

check out all the comments (you won't be able to read them all over 4k!) they are fucking furious. a shitstorm is brewing that's going to crash with their dmcado

Good. That's how people should be feeling towards Nintendo since they started doing all this shit.
Hopefully this gets to more and more people and this starts biting them in the ass in sales later on.

That's just stupid. 4k comments... a lot of them by the same people making multiple comments. Meanwhile, 139 million Switch's sold. Yeah, Nintendo is really worried. Smfh.

You don't understand! If someone can play as Wario in a TTT server then Nintendo's sales will never recover.

Spoke to Tom Fulp the other day, if he can find his old Newgrounds site content like the mini Flash animations from the 2000's that played on the portal.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
So far no response, but he did say that he'll find them. Wayback Machine doesn't have em.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, atleast the 1999 versión of pico's school is avaliable (the difference between it, the 2006 versión and the 2016 versión is that the speed of the game depends of the speed of your computer and that it had the og soundtrack)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Another being Pico VS Bear, the original 1999 version before Jim Henson filed a DMCA takedown.

  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
The 2006 versión was made when the flash portal was made

Many people thought it was lost, but was discovered that he hid it on the same page.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, although the "secrets" system where the game was has been removed. Also pico vs uberkids had a netplay versión that was shutdown, although the swf file has been found
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Nope. There are two download buttons on the same page, where you can download the original under a file called "bear.exe". "bear2.exe", however, is the updated game in a Flash projector. P.s. this was on the archived Pico page from 2000.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:

Iirc the demos were removed from newgrounds in 2022

Fun fact @SylverReZ: iirc one of the goals on the fnf Kickstarter stated that pico 2 would be finished but the Kickstarter didnt get enough money for that goal to be fullfiled

@Xdqwerty, FNF sucks, their community is toxic as hell.

@The Real Jdbye, Yea but it has a shitton of mods with their own songs and stuff
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@The Real Jdbye, and quite a lot of people involved in those mods get cancelled

Newgrounds wasn't the birth of FNF; rather, it was games where you beat up celebrities and parodies.
