United States Senate forces potential vote to bring back Net Neutrality

senators-cra-net-neutrality-may7.jpg

Last year, the United States faced the repeal of Net Neutrality, causing an uproar across the internet. The FCC voted in favor of repealing the 2015 law, leaving a large amount of disappointed Americans in its wake. Now, 6 months after the fact, the United States Senate has forced a vote, getting a minimum of 30 required senators in an attempt to bring back Net Neutrality. Once the vote occurs, they'll need a further majority of over 50 to vote in their favor, with around 50 exactly on bill's side, and while it's uncertain how things will play out when they do take it to a vote, even if they do pass the revival of Net Neutrality in the Senate, they still need to pass it in the House as well, which has a majority that does not favor bringing it back.

The vote will take place most likely by next week, and at maximum, must be done by June 12. A large amount of social media sites have come out in support of the Senate's attempt, but those against Net Neutrality claim that regaining government interference with the internet is wrong, and will set standards back.

What do you think? Do you support bringing back Net Neutrality? Or has it become a non-issue since the drama revolving around it has died down in recent months.

I really hope they do the right thing and bring back Net Neutrality and I hope they do a follow up and remove Ajit Pai. Ajit Pai ignored the vast majority of Americans in favor of sucking off his ISP overlords and he is not fit for his job.

Alright, some explaining: They need a simple majority in the Senate and the House and a signature by the president. They will likely pass it in the Senate. The House has a far bigger Republican majority, but it could be possible there as well, given many Republicans were also for net neutrality. The hurdle that definitely won't be passed is the president. Trump can and will veto this. So why bother? There's another reason this vote is taking place.

Midterm elections are coming up! This vote's entire purpose is to draw a clean line between senators and representatives who are for and against net neutrality. Then, given that net neutrality has bipartisan support by the vast majority of Americans, the results of the vote can be used to campaign against Republican representatives who voted against restoring net neutrality.

That means senators and representatives will have increased pressure to vote "Yes" and even if the measure is veto'd, it'll become a martyr for the Democrats' push for a majority somewhere in Congress.

I hope Ajit Pai (and anyone in bed with him, figuratively I mean) faces legal trouble for using fraudulent votes to get net neutrality repealed.

Yeah, that also needs to be addressed. I am shocked that the first voting wasn't pushed aside to deal with that issue.

I just find it sad how a small group of individuals have such immense power over the majority of the population, especially considering how said majority is, for the most part, against the actions taking place here.

Hopefully this gets through. I really don't want to see these guys basically screw over the entire US, and quite possibly the rest of world.

Spoke to Tom Fulp the other day, if he can find his old Newgrounds site content like the mini Flash animations from the 2000's that played on the portal.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
So far no response, but he did say that he'll find them. Wayback Machine doesn't have em.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, atleast the 1999 versión of pico's school is avaliable (the difference between it, the 2006 versión and the 2016 versión is that the speed of the game depends of the speed of your computer and that it had the og soundtrack)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Another being Pico VS Bear, the original 1999 version before Jim Henson filed a DMCA takedown.

  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
The 2006 versión was made when the flash portal was made

Many people thought it was lost, but was discovered that he hid it on the same page.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@SylverReZ, although the "secrets" system where the game was has been removed. Also pico vs uberkids had a netplay versión that was shutdown, although the swf file has been found
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Nope. There are two download buttons on the same page, where you can download the original under a file called "bear.exe". "bear2.exe", however, is the updated game in a Flash projector. P.s. this was on the archived Pico page from 2000.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:

Fun fact @SylverReZ: iirc one of the goals on the fnf Kickstarter stated that pico 2 would be finished but the Kickstarter didnt get enough money for that goal to be fullfiled
