just started playing klonoa 2 and...

Could you please stop posting stuff about interesting old games… which turn out to be out of range for blindly buying.

Oh my, a d*mn f…ing old PS2 DVD → cheapest offer on eBay at first glance about 40€.
=======

Ironically the cheapest thing I can find online for the keyword "Klonoa" is for Nintendo Switch. A stupid PS1 CD, quarter of a century old, costs more than triple than a pretty new Switch cart.
It is a question of wanting. Do I *want* to support greedy people riding on a wave of inflated retro prices caused (or at least catalyzed) by the pandemic hysteria?
No, no and NO!

How about this: You tell me a way how to produce valid PS1 and PS2 copies → then I'll download an image and write it to a disc according to your secret technique. :creep:
I'm pretty sure you can use freedvdboot to make a bootable disc for your unmodified ps2, and as far as ps1 disc copying goes you're probably the one on this forum with the most experience with weird disc drm similar to the ps1's "wobble" protection. The best bet for an iso compatible with the techniques required to produce such a copy would be a high quality "redump" iso. I found a couple links around the net with some cursory searching, and I'll leave it at that as I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post them here.
Of course if your definition is that it must be exactly like a factory pressed disk 1:1 then obviously you're not going to be interested in this anyways, but if the goal is simply to get something to boot in a stock console with minimal effort then I don't think it's that impossible.
I'd try to produce some myself, but all I have access to are cheap laptop burners atm, although even those should work with the freedvdboot exploit. (which I have used to softmod consoles in the past, so I know that works.)

I've been searching and looking around for more than a year now. As far as evaluation of markings or characteristics on PC CD-ROM goes… most of it can either be simply copied, or at least approximated good enough with a consumer burner. The toughest nut to crack is absolute sector position (CD-COPS, StarForce). I would need expensive specialized software (and a lot of concentration) to produce fully working copies.
Console disc protections on the other side: Using characteristics, which a PC drive can not even get aware of, is a whole new ball game.

For the topic: "Getting full control over the DVD part of a normal burner", I usually put post this link:
https://debugmo.de/2022/05/fjita-the-project-that-wasnt-meant-to-be/
Ultimately the ambitious project failed half a meter before reaching the finish line (and it didn't even include wobble data).

The FreeDVDBoot exploit is the perfect entrypoint for installing FreeMCBoot. I would prefer the previous ESR patching method requiring a FreeMCBoot Memory Card. This way burned game DVDs will work on the majority of PS2 consoles, where the DVD exploit will work only on a specific DVD player version (or two of them).
FreeDVDBoot on PS2 and MIL-CD loophole on Dreamcast are two neat methods of tricking the console security (not without limitations). They are not methods to satisfy the security system going through the front door.

so since you can use freedvdboot to boot copied retail games on a ps2 that you own, (since you can just use the version that aligns with your console's dvd player version) does it fall "close enough" for you to consider it a valid copy for your uses? Or is there some other criteria that you're looking for?
I'm mainly just wondering where you draw the line for playing the game to feel "right". I personally prefer to emulate some games, as they feel more "right" to play them at a higher resolution, at least if i'm using modern flat panels. (I don't have room for a crt, and I don't feel like limiting the games I can play simply because I don't have one.) I will also often make use of quality of life mods to improve the game, but I suppose I'm using as many words to say that I am not a purist when it comes to how i play my video games. Or at least with playing them "as they were intended", because generally I don't keep playing a classic game just because it's a classic if it doesn't suit my tastes.
I won't argue with the original hardware having appeal, I like to collect it, and playing games like halo 2 is still enjoyable in their original form, even when the pc version that lets me raise the fov and aim with a mouse exists.
I guess the conclusion I'm trying to draw is that while one can really only be true to how they particularly enjoy playing video games, I personally don't see that point in limiting what games you can play by only wanting to play original copies on stock hardware, because these games aren't getting any less scarce.
I need to stop writing this rantssay and go to bed, it's 6AM. I'm curious to know your thoughts.
P.S. As far as ps1 disc duplication goes, I think what I was reading was duplicating the "corrupt" sectors that some games use as an extra layer of protection, but I forgot that you can't add the wobble to the disc as that was something that would be considered an error by a burner and would thus not be intended behavior that the burner would even be capable of. Likely the copies that would be made by the guides I found would have to be used with swapmagic or some similar trick.
P.P.S Sorry for hijacking your blog, jimmer.
