Current Gaming Thoughts

  • DOOM Eternal: a flawed game that doesn't live up to the hype or its predecessor. Extremely skimpy on ammo, health and armour pickups, resulting in a boring chainsaw/glory kill/flamethrower cycle that gets old fast instead of being able to use the guns to shoot things - which is supposed to be the main point of DOOM. Pointless Bethesda.net account integration being the very first thing seen when booting up the game, when multiplayer is a side attraction at best, most players would've bought it through Steam, and the Bethesda launcher is far more customer-hostile than Valve's launcher, doesn't help matters; it should be optional and placed behind the multiplayer modes, if not removed entirely. Guns also have lower ammo caps, which is supposedly to incentivise frequent gun switching instead of just manning the Gauss Cannon, the Super Shotgun and the Chaingun, but that incentive is ruined by said low caps and lack of ammo pickups - you just simply won't have the ammo for the right gun, forcing you to drain the ammo of a less-useful gun for the situation. Oh, and they also redesigned and 'cartoonified' everything, as well as adding cutscenes and intrusive tutorials. And Marauders.
A good game, but not amazing. Play 2016 instead.
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Only one island per Switch (even if you have multiple cartridges), and only the first player gets to do anything; additional players are treated as 'guests', unable to affect development or anything. Also fired Resetti, robbing players of funny rants when they reset. Hard pass; get New Leaf instead.
  • ARMS in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: yuck. Damn you Nintendo!
  • Xenoblade Definitive: I hope they bring back XC2's Custom difficulty, and its ability to toggle enemy aggro (i.e. enemies on the field won't start battles, allowing the player to explore unmolested if they so wish). And for extremely-rare collectibles to be made easier to obtain, and Timed Quests to be handled better.
  • Bravely Default II. This doesn't seem to be Luxendarc anymore, which is a shame, but BD and Bravely Second both fully covered it, so...sigh. I wonder if old characters will return in some capacity; Bravely Second did have a cliffhanger post-credits scene, involving a group known as the "Planeswardens" and the "Sword of the Brave", so will that be a thing here? Gameplay-wise, spells aren't bought in stores, at least in the demo; the first two games had this, and had specific Job levels unlock the ability to use a handful of spells each, instead focusing more on Skills. Kind of a downgrade here; also, no Bravely Second mechanic? Hm. I wonder if a datamine would reveal just how many Jobs there are...
