Basically if there's a thread that hasn't been posted in for a while (years? months? idk i just dont want to make it too short that noob paradise threads and stuff get locked) it gets auto-locked so people can't necropost. that'd be good for all the newbies here that post in 3 years and get reported for necroposting

Yes but the problem there is sometimes after months or even years someone may come along and post something in the thread that is really useful or super important. If threads are auto locked after a period of inactivity then that important information will not be able to be posted.

I would prefer to just report posts. I enjoy bumping the bunker every couple of years

We don't auto lock threads as it's better for someone to necro an old thread with an answer, question, or relevant information than it is to start another thread with the same question/answer/information, or not post that question/answer/information at all because the thread is locked and they don't want to make their own thread.

If you ever see someone necro an old thread and it's irrelevant, simply report it and the mods will take care of it if it needs to be taken care of. Otherwise, there's no reason why older threads can't be revived when someone has something relevant to say in it.

I've posted a suggestion related to this before, and from what I remember people liked it, but it never got implemented.

I think if a thread has been dormant in a while, there should be an alert box above the reply area saying something like ‘This thread hasn't been active for X months/years. Please, carefully consider your reply before necrobumping.’

What if OP comes back with valuable information but doesn't know they can contact a mod to reopen the thread?

No, we're not going to auto lock threads, necrobumping isn't that big of a problem.
Just report the post and move on, do not reply to them.
