The origins of this hack date all the way back to 2007. Back then, I had finally learned how to do custom overworlds and insert custom graphics. Using this skills, I started, but never finished, a hack called Super Mario Bros. 5. Years later, I would rework that hack from the ground up as Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn. While that wasn't necessarily the worst hack, it quickly began to feel dated as new tools and resources were emerging and I was becoming a better level designer. Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn would need to be reborn once more under a new name that would better tie it to Mario & Luigi: Starlight Island Adventure, thus Mario & Luigi: Kola Kingdom Quest was born. Unlike the radical departure that Starlight Island Adventure was from Starlight Remix, Kola Kingdom Quest is more faithful to Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn, even using many of the same graphics and songs. The levels and overworld, however, were completely redone.
