Review Approach:

I'm a huge fan and collector of amiibo and enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for them.
No. 70 in the Super Smash Bros amiibo series, this is a true must-have for Zelda collectors!

When Nintendo announced amiibo back in early 2014 they quite literally knocked my socks off.

I remember saying to my wife "I'm going to collect every single one of those, they're amazing!", and I remember her saying something along the lines of "Noooooooooooooooooooooo" (in the style of Darth Vader) as at the time we were saving for our wedding. Little did I know they would bring out over 172 figurines (at the time of writing) and several hundred Animal crossing cards, and NO I'm not collecting those cards, they're not the same!

5 years on and Nintendo's Toys to Life range accounts for probably 60-70% of the goodies in my "man cave" with an entire boxed collection of every amiibo to date (Minus the latest USA only Megaman 11 amiibo: can anyone genuinely help me get one?? ) and a second set of purely the Zelda ones, of which there are now 23 of them!

With a release date of 10th-12th April 2019 globally, the Young link figure (AACT) is the latest and greatest and really showcases the enduring quality of Nintendo's gaming merchandise, and honestly: the attention to detail is truly incredible! The artwork and color scheme of the packaging is edgy and vibrant, and perfectly in keeping with the typical OOT Link palette.

Inside the packaging Link has his Deku shield emblazoned with the symbol representing the Kokiri's spiritual emerald in full defense ready mode, and the small but deadly Kokiri sword in a fully dynamic and nostalgic OOT pose. Link's classic green tunic has a brilliantly observed yaw to its fabric and the colors are as true as you can remember to the games. Even his sheath has not been skimmed over with its rivets, gold and blue color scheme, and the leather belt fastening it to him is exquisitely modeled.

This figure has a nice weight to it, a balanced feel in the palm of your hand and an air of excellence about it that only Nintendo's seal of quality could deliver. I want to stress that I recently checked out Totaku figures and the build and paint quality was abysmal in comparison to any amiibo out there.

Functionality-wise this figure is made primarily for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, however it should still function in BOTW, Mario Kart 8 D, Splatoon 2 and other titles that accept "any" scanned amiibo for items. Don't be fooled though, this figure is not just for gaming, its actually perfect for displaying alongside your other Zelda memorabilia or other amiibo!

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • Solid construction.
  • Superb attention to detail.
  • Dynamic OOT pose.
  • No unsightly clear plastic supports.
What We Didn't Like ...
  • Compatibility with games.
  • Has to be removed from the box to use in-game.

Overall

Another stunning outing (12th incarnation) for Link in his amiibo range.
I'll be on the lookout for megaman 11 amiibo for you. I am also an in-box collector and feel your pain. Those japanese ones can be rough to get.

It is a good model, for sure. slightly dissapointed there wasn't more majora's mask stuff going on, but that's just me being unrealistic.
