Among the key features of a video game include aspects like gameplay, story development and visuals. And to make a game as great as the latest God of War, one that has amassed countless 10/10 reviews including ours, all of these aspects have to weave in meticulously together in order to deliver the final product that wows players.

However, there is another key component of games that is often taken for granted because, should it be professionally orchestrated, it so intrinsically get welded into the game as a whole that it goes unnoticed. I am, of course, talking about a video game’s soundtrack. For a game like God of War, the music score has had to be top notch in order to live up to Santa Monica Studio's gameplay standards.

Composed by Bear McCreary, known for his work on the reimagined Battlestar Galactica television series and for the TV series Outlander and The Walking Dead, the soundtrack has received the vinyl treatment from Mondo. As can be expected from the latter, the product is of high quality; feeling sturdy on the colored 180 gram vinyls. The artwork done by Jeff Langevin also feels particularly appropriate with a minimalist aspect that nevertheless speaks volumes of the adventure that awaits in-game, especially if you devote some time to take in the front cover art.

It’s not only about the hardware quality but the audio output is also very faithful to the original music. There is also a foreword by McCreary on the back of one of the records’ sleeve where he recalls bagging the role of music composer for the game, his excitement and the ensuing endeavor he undertook to materialize the audio that we can now appreciate. McCreary’s score fuses Nordic folk instruments, Old Norse language and even recorded choir in Iceland with Schola Cantorum who had an authentic approach to the text, to deliver soundtracks that permeates the essence of God of War's universe as they were meant to.

For an officially licensed, high quality product like this, one might expect to pay top dollar to purchase it but the God of War soundtrack 2x LP from Mondo is priced at an affordable $35. Easily a collectible for any fan of the game, with or without a record player to listen to it on. But if you do have a record player, set it to 33 RPM, sit back with a book and/or cup of tea/coffee and let the music transport you to the world of God of War.

So what’s the catch? There has to be a downside to this all, right? Well my only complaint is that, as with many Mondo products, this one is a limited edition. It is sold out at the time of writing on the official website but that doesn’t exclude the possibility of future reprints. However, I believe that more people would appreciate if a product from such a revered title would be more widely available. Moreover, it’s just available in vinyl format and not everybody might have a record player lying around at home just to play this epic score.

lol a 9.5 for being sold out... why not just a 10? does playing it backward reveal cursed satanic chanting?

I don't think that con is taking away points from the score. I would assume the score is a review of the music itself along with the physical packaging :)
