I was wondering if I plugged one end of the Y cable for my external hard drive into an outlet and the other into the Wii U would I manage to save a port? Or do you need both plugged into the Wii U for it to work?

I just saved myself the headache and bought a 128GB USB 3.0 "nano-sized" USB stick. Doesn't stick out, and plays all games just fine.
Unfortunately, with the amount of storage I require, I would need one of these. (Pic Below) :wtf:

Yep but a usb stick will break a lot sooner than a hdd due to the fact the wiiu is constantly reading and writing to it. A usb stick is designed to be read from constantly not written to where as a hdd is desingned to be constantly read from and written to. Thats why when Breath of the wild came out nintendo gave out a statement saying only use nand or hdd and never to use a usb stick. Using one on wiiu you are just drastically reducing the usb sticks lifespan.

Actually, each time it saves your game progress it writes to the same location the game files are in. It would have been nice if the console could have the game content in USB and the save data in nand but sadly nintendo did't think so.

I plugged my Y cable in back of Wii U
Oddly Wii was powerful enough to power my HDD but Wii U wasn't

The games only need installed once, they can be read from nearly unlimited times. And if you buy a short nano drive like I did, it won't snap off.
Those tiny usb drives tend to get pretty hot. I'd be surprised if you didn't get some kind of slow down after playing for a while.

I know it's late but did plugging one y cable to wall outlet work?
