Hi everyone,

I'm not very familiar with 3DS hacks and I'm a little bit confused about what was done to my 3DS. I was wondering if anyone here could do a little detective work.
Here's my story:
I went to overseas and I asked 2 3DS to be hacked at a game shop. 1 is my 3DS xl and the other one is 3ds original.
I asked what CFW was going to be installed and the shop assistant told me she was going to install Luma.
Sure enough, i paid (because it was cheap) and asked her to install the CFW.

After waiting for an hour, the 3DS XL had Luma, Homebrew and FBI successfully installed. The 3ds original couldn't have the CFW installed because of the SD Card issue (which later on i found that i had gateway emunand installed). I had no spare SD card at that time and I asked the lady to at least hack it so that later on I could install FBI and Homebrew myself and sure she did it for me.

Few months after returning from overseas, I checked the 3DS XL's SD card and tried to look for hint of what method of hacking she did to install the Luma CFW and I'm puzzled. I was wondering if you could help to find out what hack was done to my 3DS XL so that I could do the same to my 3DS original.

Here are the clues from what I gather looking at the SD cards:
  • Both 3DS were updated to Firmware 11.0
  • The SD card contains files/folders: 3ds, cias, GAMES, gm9, luma, boot.3dsx, boot.firm
  • Closer inspection into 3DS folder, I found the following files/folders: CHMM2, ctr-httpwn, ftpd, hans, install, menuhax_manager, mgba, prboom, qtm, scrtool, dspfirm.cdc, eshop,smdh, eshop.xml, fbi.3dsx, ironhax.smdh, ironhax.xml, sploit_installer_oot3dhax.smdh, sploit_installer_oot3dhax.xml, sploit_installer_stickerhax.smdh, sploit_installer_stickerhax.xml
Does anyone have any idea what hack she used to install CFW?

Depending on the firmware version before any update she probably used Soundhax+udsploit+safehax to get the SafeB9SInstaller started.

Having CFW installed by another person has the downside that you do not know what all the terms and software and how to use it. I suggest reading https://3ds.hacks.guide/ to get to know everything as if you were doing it on an unmodified device.

Hold (Select) while booting to find the Luma version number on the top of the upper screen. It should not be v7.1 (else you have to update your B9S installation)

What you need to do in order to get everything installed is more or less the finalizing setup part. But: Make sure latest Luma (boot.firm) and Homebrew Launcher (boot.3dsx) are in the root of the SD. https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/releases

Good luck and have fun.

Possibly NTRboot?

If I'd be doing a lot of 3DS jailbreaking, I would go for the fastest and most reliable method.

Yes. Good point. What puzzles me is the part with "Both 3DS were updated to Firmware 11.0". Why that random firmware version from 2016? Sighax came May 2017 and ntrboot became usable for the end user a little later.

Anyway, the method does not matter. The result is always the same. B9S/Luma3DS

Okay, I pressed Select as I was booting and it says Luma Ver 9.0.

Now I just need to prepare SD Card and install FBI, homebrew. Is the Finalizing Part link above all i need to install them?

By the way, my original 3DS is not booting with a 128 GB micro sd card with SD card adapter for some reason but it's working fine with 3DS XL. Is it not compatible or something?

SDXC isn't oficially supported on the 3DS. You will need to format it with FAT32.

To follow finalizing setup, you need boot.3dsx from https://github.com/fincs/new-hbmenu/releases on the SD

Okay, so I followed the finalizing setup page (except for the one that says system update) and I managed to install homebrew ,FBI and updated Luma at the same time.

I was wondering about the system update. If i go online, download and install system update, will it break the CFW or anything?

The guide tells you to update because you should update.

Okay fair enough. But what about those who had already done the finalizing setup in the past and then there was a new system update? Did they go back and re-do the Finalizing setup part again to install the latest system update?

If there's a new system update, you could check the forum to see what people are saying - within a few hours there will be an answer as to whether you can update. The guide would also be updated within about a day to say not to update if you shouldn't.
Edit - and yes, as below, updating just means going into System Settings and choosing to update.

No. you just do the system update from the consoles system settings. System updates are not tied into that.

Okay, everything is solved then. I read in other threads that I just need to make sure to put the latest Boot.firm and probably boot.3dsx before updating the system software. Cool. I'll do this tonight.
