A release date has finally been confirmed for the new Lord of the Rings game, focused on Gollum, which was originally supposed to release in 2021. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will release for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S on September 1, with a Nintendo Switch version planned for later in the year, and is being developed by Daedalic Entertainment, who are known for adventure games, mostly point-and-click games like the Deponia series.

Gollum will be a "story-driven stealth adventure" that follows Gollum's unseen actions during the first few chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring, as he sets out on a "perilous journey that leads him from the dungeons of Barad-dûr to the realm of the Wood-elves in Mirkwood." Player choice will apparently be an important factor in the game, with a branching narrative that will have Gollum encounter many familiar characters from the book series. Gollum's other half, Sméagol, will also play a role, with players having the option to let him take over and make important decisions.

There are so many interesting characters and stories in the Middle Earth universe, but it always has to be Gollum. Oh well, I'm not going to complain about a new LOTR game. I'm just glad this one didn't get cancelled.

To be fair them calling it a Lord of the Rings game is itself a somewhat notable act -- recall all the fun surrounding Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

There's no mention to these so called adventures that he had, you cant just magically make crap up.

Out of all the more interesting possibilities you could base a game on, they come out with this.

And lol, welcome to nintendont where you have to wait until everyone else has already been there, done that for their console to get a shit inferior port, and pay full price for it and likely have to download the sodding game.

It'll likely be in the bargain bin by time nintendont gets it.

Out of all the more interesting possibilities you could base a game on, they come out with this.

Compared to Amazon basically making things out of whole cloth then there would be a timeline, sources in books ( http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/The_Hunt_for_the_Ring ), end results, references and allusions to events and more besides with presumably enough leeway to make a few things work for being in a game.

As far as "more interesting possibilities" then sure but you probably would have to pay more money for such rights.
