When i first started contemplating modding my Switch Lite someone told me to make sure the installer "Only trims, but does not entirely remove the heatshield".

Ive never performed the installation on any of my Switch units. Was that good advice and is that something i need to communicate to the installer?

I just want to double-check before i contact them over this.

The "trimming" is needed to create a passage for the flex cable which is soldered to capacitors on the CPU. If the installer is used to mod these consoles, he should already know it, otherwise take it to an experienced one.

Do you mean the main heatshield or just the cpu heat shield?

When using the Lite specific modchip,

I didn't need to touch the main heatshield whatsoever. This is different than the regular V1/V2 which require trimming of the main heatshield to make room for the chip.

I left the CPU heat shield completely off as it would have required way too much trimming and essentially destroyed the heatshield anyway. The heat pipe still makes great connectivity and I've seen no issues w/ temps rising.

e: apparently I'm a savage but honestly I don't see the need for modifying the cpu cover as long as the heatpipe makes good connectivity. I do good thermal paste. :-)

@binkinator Thats literally all he said to me. I wanted to ask precisely what he meant, but sadly he has left discord and now im stuck wondering what he might have meant.

EDIT: I may not remember it exactly. Human memory is flawed. I tried to repeat it as best i could.

@Phantomas77 Do you have some kind of visual reference of someone trimming a heatshield without removing it?
I feel as tho that would help me immensely in visualizing it.

there are 2 heatshields
the cpu heatshield is what you probably mean
which you need to remove to even solder the chip, on the lite the flex from the chip exits the left side
so once the shield is removed the shield you just trim where the metal folds down on the left side so the flex can pass through fine.

I found that I was also going to need to trim where the anchor solder points were as well so now I ended up with 3 sides of a rectanglular heat shield w/ pieces removed and it was starting to look like origami at which point I figured the contact patch for the heat pipe/shield/cpu was going to be compromised anyway, so I left it off. That’s my retarded reasoning (excuse) anyway…

I mean I always just removed the copperish sticker in the middle anyhow for direct thermal transfer to the die

Instead of heatpipe paste sticker paste cpu

@izy like i said, not gonna install it at all.
just wanted to give the installer some examples on how to trim it, so i know im gonna be happy with the result.
also... i did not ask on discord. This is GBAtemp, a PHP based forum.
The only place i asked.

or was that reply directed at an entirely different person?

Do you got a tutorial you can direct me too, I haven't been able to find a install guide for the lit
