A friend has a XAW100796XXXXX for sale. I know that this falls into the "orange" category, but was wondering whether it's more probable that it isn't patched, given that it's on the lower end of the orange range? Is that how it works?

You don't know. I've seen patched switches with lower serial number in the unknown range and unpatched switches with higher serial number in the unknown range. One factory may start producing patched consoles with low serial number as they run out of unpatched tegra soc, while another factory may keep producing unpatched consoles with high serial number as long as the old soc is still in stock.

Only way to be sure is testing it yourself by entering rcm and injecting a payload.

Patched eristas, mariko and aula units need a modchip. There is no other way.

In the system settings. Scroll down until you are at the end. There is a menu called "Console" or in german "Konsole". The first row in this submenu shows you your firmware version.

I think Modderators should close this thread for furthers posts, after 4 years there is no new information ALL INFORMATION IS ON THE OP, nothing changed since then and NEVER will change.

you only need to READ and know is a console is patched or not and if is on the orange category the only way to tell if is patched or not is trying to inject a payload PERIOD.

besides ANY PATCHED console need and will need a chip, no discussion, no other way.

Then you have to update. And after the update you're automatically on 15.0.0.

I know it falls into the possibly patched category, but maybe someone had the same serial number and can confirm if it's patched or not?
I've seen that someone confirmed XAJ400532XXXXX to be unpatched, but mine ends with a 6, not 2.

Alternatively, if you're really good at soldering, then you could buy a HWFLY depending on which model of Switch you have.

No one can confirm whether it is patched or not. You have to do that by yourself. Send a payload to the console and see what happens. Blackscreen=patched.
