Super Mario 3D All Stars gets new update that adds support for the new N64 controller on Switch

aaaa.png

If the Super Mario 3D All-Stars release of Super Mario 64 wasn't feeling authentic enough for you, it might now. Nintendo has put out a new update for the game, which adds support for the Nintendo Switch Online N64 controller. It goes along with the previous update that came out last year, which allowed players to use the GameCube adapter to play Super Mario Sunshine with that controller option. Of course, having an NSO N64 controller to use with the new update might be a bit of struggle, considering they're all sold out until next year.

Oh nice, it was kinda amusing that it wasn't supported before lol.

Also kinda crazy how much worse the NSO version of Mario 64 is given they already had a better version available. Guess they didn't want to set a precedent for putting effort in that'd come back to bite them?

This genuinely is curious, one would assume the emulation occurring between both offerings would be achieved through the same emulator built for Switch, but that doesn't seem to be the case, which is all the more curious when the better emulation on the system came first.

Also I don't think I'll ever be able to get over Mario Galaxy 2's omission in the 3D All-Stars collection, and any time u see the title pop up, I feel the need to lament this ridiculous oversight by Nintendo.

Depends on who you are. NSO version is better for speed runners because of BLJ and All-stars is better for casual players.

A better version that uses the same emulator

I thought someone did some digging and found that the N64 emulator offered in the NSO version was the same as the emulator used in the 3DAS version.
Damn if that actually is the case that's wild. I realise my previous comments come across a little more argumentative than intended so apologies there.

No worries on that. I want to say MVG's video touched up on it. I don't quite remember.. Been watching a dozen videos a day trying to catch up with the latest technological trends. :v

Edit: Here's the twitter thread referenced in MVG's video.

ahh yes, the same kick in the nuts every time the game reboots...cause iirc isn't it the smg2 star get sound that plays when you start up the collection? despite said game oddly not being in there

NSO was low effort by Nintendo.

The Wii N64 Emulator was their best offering. Each individual game had a ver. of the Emualtor was tailored made specifically for that game. This led to high quality emulation of graphics that was closer to N64 hardware and lower input lag. Nintendo really went in and tested each individual game to give us quality.

While the NSO ver. Is a lazy attempt just one overarching emulator without any individual adjustments. Is insane considering the $30 price tag they want.

You are wrong, each N64 game on NSO have very specific settings and some lua hack patches to work with...thats why the injection of titles couldnt be done as easy as people were thinking it would be...like NES/SNES/Genesis.

"Beyond that, there are 17+ RomOption settings, and 77+ RenderSetting settings to be documented and set per game as needed. On top of that, NERD uses lua hacks too, to fix some issues. For non-officially released games, all this will have to be figured out by skilled community members."

Why does a console/game need an update to support a controller, why it cant be the same as a normal controller but in a different shell.

Also wonder if these controllers still use the same shitty analogue stick.

Starfox was pretty good. So I believe that. But makes me wonder why Ocarina of Time was the worst of the bunch. Some of the poor emulation is immediately noticable without looking for it. The different colored gauntlets, no reflection in the water, the input lag being horrible. Wii VC was superior. All of this had to be immediately noticable in beta testing the emu.

It's really weird, too. It's almost like they rushed this compilation. Which is funny, given how slow they've been to enhance the User experience on the Switch.
