So with the decompilation of Sonic Mania recently released, does anyone know long it might take, or if anyone has already taken up the guise of undertaking such a port?

A bit of a tangential question, but how hard is 3ds porting anywho? There's a surprising lack of documentation I can seem to find on the matter, and it seems like a fun hobby, were the means a bit more available on it!

It's impossible to know, the port will only exist when someone is interested in porting it to that platform, with someone interested in doing the port you might even see ports to a totally unknown console like Zeebo like Open Lara ( )

The Port for PS Vita is already done, I don't think it will take long to have someone interested in porting Sonic Mania to the 3DS, PSP or even Wii U, my doubt is if it will be playable on Old 3DS since Sonic CD only works on New 3DS while the Sonic 1 and 2 ports work on Old.

I don't know if Sonic Mania would be playable on the Old 3DS, but it would be awesome if someone could.

Am I missing something? Last I checked, Sonic CD isn't even fullspeed on New 3DS (special stages are a bit slow)

I'm sure it functions on old 3DS, but running well is another thing entirely... which is usually the case when people say homebrew is 'new 3DS only' I believe

Last time I checked it didn't work on the Old 3DS.

I need to take another look, I would love to be able to play it on my 3DS.
definitely try again, i have an O3DS and it works fullspeed with stereo3D enabled. The only downside is slightly long loading times for the levels, and glitchy special stages. Everything else works perfectly

Since I only have a old 2ds, it does work but the special stages don't work.

The special stages are a fairly critical part of the game... the game might run but it's far from a great experience that way unfortunately.

It'd be nice if whatever rendering issue those have will be fixed at some point though, it'd run far better than the software rendering the new 3DS build uses.

the special stages are special stages. The game can be played to completion without issues and the actual levels run fullspeed 100%, not "playable" but actually fullspeed. If you want everything running perfectly just don't play ports, go play the original game on PC or whatever platforms were released officially by sega...
I mean, it's a matter of personal preference. I'm perfectly happy with the port, there's things to improve? sure, but it's way more than enough to say "i have sonic CD on my 3DS". But anyone not satisfied with the port can skip it, after giving it a shot tho.

Where did you find a working version on O3DS ? I only get an ARM11 error with both, Sonic1 & 2.

Edit : you were talking about Sonic CD... Sorry.

with 1 and 2 why don't you just use the official ports? those work really well and have stereo3D support both in regular layered mode and in "CRT popping out of the screen" mode, which i really dig and wish i could use with other emulators

I am using them, but I like the full screen mode of the ports ;) and I have a N3DS as well so it is not a big deal. About Sonic CD, I agree with you, the port is the only way to play it on O3DS, picodrive (retroarch and bubble versions) are not able to play it the right way.
