Sonic Frontiers: World Premiere gameplay trailer

After teasing a first-look at Sonic Frontiers, IGN has revealed the world premiere gameplay showcase for the game. The 7-minute video sees Sonic traveling through an open world, sparsely decorated with things you'd expect to see in a Sonic game: rings, springs, and rails. There's a large tower ala typical other open world games, that Sonic can climb to the top of. There are puzzles to solve that can unlock new areas, as well. Sonic Frontiers will be out before the end of the year, with more gameplay scheduled to be shown next week.

needs more time in the oven...namely optimizations...that pop-in. yikes.

I can understand why Sega was reluctant to show off anything...i'd hate to see what it looked like a few months before this

No, because nintendo did not invent open world games.

The environment details looks good, but then its ruined with a cartoonish sonic and all the walls, grind rails and floating pads and springs just makes it look crap.

Mario Odyssey and Zelda BotW were on the Switch and those games are superb. If Sega wants they can make it work.
These games were made by Nintendo itself, no one understands the Switch's hardware better than the one that created it. (and Super Mario Odyssey is not an open-world)

All other open-world made by other developers on Switch suffer a lot to run, even the Xenoblade remake can drop the resolution to 504p and have drops to bellow 20fps and this game was originally from the Wii.

This looks like it'll have less of a Sonic-esque feel than BotW felt like a Zelda title... I hope I'm wrong, and we have more level reminiscent of Sonic the Hedgehog rather than another barren wasteland of an open world title.

why sega why. how can sega keep torturing me. I once was one of the cool kids with sonic on the genesis. just stop using real world graphics combined with a cartoon character. I think an improved lost world formular is the best fit for sonic. cartoony world, fast hedgehog but not too fast, full stop breaks on crash just sucks, falling off the world sucks. slow segments like werewolf sonic sucks. or just sell sonic licence to nintendo. just do it thank you!!!

Not really sold on this quite yet. Looks like any other 3D Sonic game, just more empty. Sonic also seems needlessly slow on foot. Hopefully they make some improvements before launch.

I feel like many Sonic fans are super picky, like Sonic games are very limited into what they can be for them . . .
Honestly i like that they try different things besides 2d super fast platformers.
Sonic can be kinda like Mario and be in every genre of game but then you get some fans bitching coz its not like the Sega Genesis games ffs . . .
Personally i enjoyed the Sonic and Sega all star racing and Sonic Battle games. The rpg was ok but id like to see him in a bigger one.
Anyways, if a game is good then it doesn't matter if its what some Sonic fan want Sonic to be imo.
If only Sonic Fans were like you then they would appreciate a Sonic game fot what it is.

Long time Sonic fan here, I go all the way back to the 90s (I'm old ). I really don't think this gameplay style fits Sonic games... For these games I rather play Zelda, etc. I don't know, we will see but I'm a very cautiously optimistic about this one. One thing I'll say is I love his model in the game.
You don't make Sonic games so how would you know if this gameplay style fits?

Oh my that's a lot of crap floating everywhere in Green Hills Zone 3.

I better not mention Spring Yard Zone 1.

OH crap I just did.
Man it's almost as if 2d and 3d games are entirely different. Gosh imagine such a silly thing literally showcased before your fanboy eyeballs. Sonic 2d? Looks great, expertly crafted. This shit? 6 year olds in minecraft do better.

This game looks like an empty fan project in alpha

>Fanboy

I don't play Sonic Games, I played all of one, adventures (Dreamcast). I've seen videos in passing (IE: GDQ/Speedrun related things) enough to know regardless your statement about 'lots of floating crap' is bullshit. And bullshit is the nicest word I could think for it. Floating/out of place objects in Sonic just *is*. Floating islands is literally the key plot locale of Sonic 3 (& Knuckles), for example.

I care not one bit for Sonic, but complaining about 'lots of floating crap' when the stuff has been a major point of Sonic since the first freaking game goes to show malice in your statements that come from someone who is just out to insult something that's inherently been part of the Sonic Landscape since forever. If it's not your style, quite frankly bashing it just goes to show the game's not for you, and like me, you shouldn't go attacking it because it's not your cup of tea.

Easy there avgn.
Idk if you noticed but sega was just showcasing how it plays and how it looks like, it wasn't a walkthrough.

Don't be dumb.

The only things that seems bad so far based on this gameplay are the pop-in and Sonic seems a little too slow for the scale of the map even with the boost, I wish they could have brought back the spin dash from Lost World for this game, it would work really well for navigating an open world as it allows you to keep your momentum indefinitely.
Sega must understand that if they want to restore/renew/reabilitate sonic, they must ask to nintendo to collaborate with its teams. Only Nintendo can do it!
Also, this is a really wrong perception people seem to have. If Nintendo ever got involved with Sega to develop a Sonic game they would most likely want to play it safe (not to say that Nintendo doesn't try different things sometimes, but they still keep playing it safe, modern 2D Mario games are one of the worst offenders) since the very first game Sonic Team has been the polar opposite of that, being experimental is a key element of the series, whether it is for good or bad results. I just hope they get more consistent in terms of good games.

You're right.

Nintendo always does some amazing compression no one else can achieve, even back on the Game Boy days, too.

The game looks good. The mini-puzzles seem fairly simple and understandable enough to solve to progress further into the game. The rail sliding and spinballing which is a typical function for Sonic games doesn't seem to miss a beat, especially w/ the camera angle following along fine. Only nitpick I have is the mipmapping, primarily that textures are a bit slow to appear on-screen in the game, but I understand it's going to be hard to catchup while moving at a fast pace. Other than that, looking forward to what more presentations are in store for this game.

Looks empty, rough, unimaginative, boring and choppy. The puzzles look pulled from Nintendo’s trash can. They should call it Sonic Solitude. How disappointing and sad this looks. If they are half a year from release wow what a joke...

The limited view distance causes a lot of pop-in which is a little jarring. The floating objects in a realistic open-world environment do look out of place. But that said, I don't really know how they could have done it any other way. Sonic is all about platforming, and it just wouldn't work without floating platforms, rails, and springs. It would be a barren wasteland.

This video does leave a bit to be desired. It looks like a bunch of puzzles without a defined objective. I don't really have an issue with the puzzles themselves, though. It's clear that they wanted to demonstrate a specific aspect of the game with this video, so it's entirely possible that further details will flesh it out and show how the game comes together better.

I do hope they managed to make a cohesive game. I've waited too long for another open world Sonic game, and I think the idea has promise. I'm looking forward to seeing what else they have to show off, even if the taste on this one was a little bland.

Can we just enjoy a Sonic game for what it is and not be judgemental? This is why I don't listen to Sonic Fans cus they nicpick over everything or say "this is not I wanted or this isn't how a Sonic game should be" to the point they start sounding like a bunch of confederates.
